Demographics

People of every race, religion, class, creed, and every other quality are flocking to Phaistea en masse, making it one of the most diverse town is Hellenis as far as different species who inhabit it. The reason that diversity doesn't rack across the other metrics is that very nearly everyone comes to work the mines or in some way support them, and nearly everyone becomes rich doing so.

Government

Makarios was so well-liked when he became mayor, the people of the town vociferously demanded that he effectively re-write their charter and give himself near absolute authority over the settlement. Makarios did so, and has never once since given them cause to regret it. Though he has the final and in many cases only say, the mayor keeps a council of the most well-liked and influential townspeople and listens carefully to their advice.

Defences

You would be forgiven for mistaking the city for a great fortress at a distance due to its high stone walls and imposing gatehouse. In these times of potential war, it may not be enough to protect such a strategically valuable location from the larger powers, but more inhabitants and so defenders arrive nearly every day. The town has decided to take its independence seriously and provide those potential defenders with every advantage they possibly can. the walls are reinforced while crenellations and towers dot its length. The gatehouse includes murder-holes and additional fortified gates to be dropped in an emergency.

Industry & Trade

Though it is clean and well developed, Phaistea is still very much a mining town. Everything the city does is either to mine, support the mine, or support the miners. Somewhat unusually for a town its size, the Phaisteans not only smelt their ore, but forge it, cut gems and craft jewelry as well.

Infrastructure

The explosion of wealth at Phaistea means that they could afford to build essentially every amenity under the sun as if they were a much larger city, and they have done so. There are water wheels alongside the nearby river for every machine and purpose the people of Hellenis know how to build. The roads in town and leading out of it are nearly imperial in quality. Running water, sewers, enormous and hermetically sealed granaries, Phaistea is a city built with an eye on enormous future expansion.

Assets

The primary asset the town has, which has provided the incredible lifestyle attained by nearly all its residents, is the mine. Originally it was intended as a semi-exploratory iron mine, chasing a small vein in the hope of becoming a small link in the enormous chain of iron that has so defined the Age of Knights. Instead, they found the most productive gold mine in the history of Hellenis, and an unheard of number of precious gems.
