"The Strong" is an obviously boastful epithet even from an outside perspective, but it is even more so in the city-state of Metios where it has not been used since the great hero who founded their city. Not one person has ever objected to King Megakles taking the title for himself, probably because it is even more obvious to locals and outsiders that it is simple truth. Megakles is descended from giants and their blood runs strongly in his veins; he is over ten feet tall, nearly as broad, and made mostly of muscle. From the moment he was crowned, King Megakles has obsessed over securing an heir greater than himself and passing on to them a greater kingdom than he inherited himself. His first attempt was a marital alliance with Andaros he had hoped to expand to the point that his heir would inherit both cities and have a stable base with which to build an empire. His alliance progressed beautifully, but the only child he was able to father with his wife was small and sickly. The king has recently set aside his wife and begun courting Queen Actë of Crotera, an action which has pushed the entire region of Hellenis to the brink of war. His new alliance will be much less wealthy than his previous one, but even more martially puissant and the unique genetics and geneamancy of the Croteran royalty means he has very good odds of siring a child worthy of commanding such powerful armies if he can live long enough to do so. In order to ensure that outcome, the king made a deal with devils. Literally. While the details are unknown he paid a price steep enough to gain the protection of the Hells' greatest knights for himself and his betrothed.
