The office of Master of Trade for the City and Republic of Oros has always attracted a large number of applicants only interested in the gleam of all the coin that flows into and out of the city, and in ways to appropriate as much as possible for themselves, but the Council has historically chewed through these people quickly. The role goes through cycles of seeing a new face every few weeks as previous occupants are exiled or executed until an honorable person is found and holds the position for decades. Demeas is a nearly unique case in that he is clearly as greedy and corrupt as the worst of them, but is so keen and lucky that he has maintained the position for over six years. A significant amount of his success is owed to his seemingly genuine belief that the "extralegal solutions" he offers will grow the city's economy as a whole in addition to enriching him, the full-throated support of the church of the Serpent Shark, and the fact that his economic theory appears to currently be actually working. Many suspect that this is a house of cards which will eventually fall, and that his belief in the Crossroads god of chaos is an act, but it is an act that has not slipped yet. In addition to the expected illegitimate fees and bribes, Demeas is a key player in the city's black market, and an important first contact in getting in touch with nearly any group of organized crime in the city.
