Damon has the incredible mixed fortune to be the scion of one of Libria's most powerful and prestigious wizard families but lacking even the whisper of wizardly talent. Like many of Libria's historical ungifted black sheep he looked elsewhere to acquire power and claw his way into eternal competition for power in an arcane meritocracy. Also like many of those predecessors his reach somewhat exceeded his grasp. Most who follow this particular path wind up destroying themselves in the process but all chase those few exceptions who managed to make a name for themselves. Damon managed to survive his search for power, and even reached dizzying heights. His mistake, which precipitated his fall, was simply overestimating how much his family's influence could shield him, or perhaps underestimating the public reaction to his choice of power source. Damon made a deal with a Demon Princess. The precise details of that deal beyond the power he gained will likely never be known because he chose as his patroness Hush, the Lady of Stillness, and like all her adherents he lost his tongue. Though exactly what dark pact was made never got out and there was no noticeable ill effect for the city, just the general reputation of demonic influence was enough that when the people turned him out, the powerful of his home city state supported them and his family cut ties. Oros is a much more open-minded city, and while he is still openly distrusted, carrying a sinister reputation at first glance even in his new home, power and money talk loud enough to overcome the more muted resistance he still faces.
