Adamantism
Transmission & Vectors
The primary way for Adamantism to manifest is through an ancestor's exposure to the legacy of the Adamant Dwarves. Though a bloodline is far more likely to acquire the condition or a proclivity to it from interaction with more complex artifacts or even corpses, there remains some chance of contraction in any prolonged interaction with the metal. Miniscule amounts of the metal enter the cells and bond directly to the DNA. To date, there has been no recorded case of the condition manifesting in the exposed individual, it occurs only in descendants, sometimes direct and sometimes several generations down the line.
Causes
It appears that Adamantism manifests when the somewhat random placement of the metal in their DNA results in a semi-organic variant being created and transmitted through the bloodstream. These variants can occur in nearly any part of the host body, and remain viable to be passed on to children in all cases, but symptoms only occur in the case that they occur in the bloodstream.
Symptoms
The most obvious symptoms of Adamantism can easily be confused for anemia, resulting in pale skin, coldness in extremities, and often noticeable thinness. The most significant is an absolute inability to channel arcane magic through the body. This results in a significant resistance to the effects of many arcane spells, and an absolute inability to cast them, even through scrolls.
Treatment
There is no known cure for Adamantism outside of divine intervention, but alleviation of its more mundane symptoms is possible through normal methods, they do not appear to themselves be magically imposed.
