The Freeborn

Structure

The Freeborn are very loosely organized. Telann’tevarra or Skymistress Telann’severni or Skymaster Their leaders are elected. Any rider who has been with the Camp for five years or more can vote. A rider who has been with the Camp for a minimum of twelve years is eligible for the position. Each leadership position can be served for five years with the possibility of being re-elected for a second term. They may not serve more than two terms. Each of the leaders is assisted by a Hand. The Hand is also elected by the same process as the leaders. While you must have been with the Camp for five years at least to vote for a Hand, to run for the position you need only have been a member of the Camp for a minimum of eight years. Hands serve for five years as well and may run for a second term, but only two terms may be served.   If you've served as a Hand, you may choose to run for a leadership position, but there must be a gap between your time as a Hand and running for leader. If you served one term as a Hand, you need only wait one electoral term before doing so; however, if you served two terms, you must wait two terms before making the attempt.

Public Agenda

The Freeborn prefer to stay out of public affairs, choosing to focus on the preservation of Alastea in general and the study of dragons in particular.

History

After the First Alastean War in 872, some dragonriders felt that the way things were being done in Dulanenn Hold weren't to their liking. The methods of selecting new riders didn't sit well with them. They brought their concerns to the Dragonleaders and were firmly told that this was how things were done and how they would continue to be done. It was for the protection of the dragons and for the safety of the Hold.   They took this poorly and so, with the support of their dragons, they set off on their own, going back to the way things had been done on the mainland. Thus the first Freeborn Camp was established on An'taha Island. After some time had passed, other camps were established on Rojekma, Dulanenn, and finally on Xuwenn.   The Freeborn don't have an easy relationship with their Hold counterparts, particularly with the Xuwenn riders who see them as outcasts. This doesn't bother them much and they continue to do what they do, helping out where they feel they're needed, but generally keeping to themselves.   They allow their dragons to Choose their riders in the traditional manner, feeling that it's more natural than what the Holds had been doing. They allow anyone to join their ranks whether or not they have a wild or Holdborn dragon.
