Khallil the Great Character in Keverynn | World Anvil

Khallil the Great

Khallil Altrvyann (a.k.a. Khallil the Great)

The original Khallil was a noble warrior under a chieftain called Bannior. He was one of many to fight in a war against a death cult who was determined to perform a ritual that, if successful, would open a gate between realities. This ritual had to be interrupted if Keverynn was to remain safe.   Unfortunately, Khallil panicked during the initial charge against the magical forces, resulting in his chieftain's death. The humiliation of his mistake sent Khallil into a frenzy, and he rallied the remaining troops. They broke in on the ritual while it was in progress. Most of the acolytes in the cult were killed, but Khallil captured the high priest and interred him in his own temple.   During that night, those on watch witnessed a glowing light. All troops still within the ritual area died within five minutes. It took five warriors working in cooperation to kill the creature that had emerged. Khallil demanded that the high priest seal the rift. The priest was willing, but he needed a human being to perform the new ritual. Khallil bravely volunteered to be the seal guard. Khallil's left eye was taken as a part of the material components of the ritual. Once the ceremony was complete, Khallil's sense of duty was wholly focused towards the seal and nothing else. He immediately attacked to eliminate all that would remember the ceremony and its purpose. The few who escaped attested to his rampage.   His progeny were unremarkable for several centuries until one in particular was born hundreds of years ago in the city of Hash-Beneir to an unknown mother and father.

Personal history

Born Khallil Altrvyann, he joined with the Darkriders at the age of twelve, which is where he got his first wyvern; a blue named Skyhammer who took his left eye. Khallil the Great developed quickly, and his powers soon surpassed those of the other Darkriders. When, at age fifteen, Skyhammer died in a battle for superiority within the clan, Khallil the Great used his skills in sorcery to extract a bond from a black called Warshriek. Then, at the age of twenty, when Warshriek died, Khallil the Great again disappeared for a month and returned with a new mount. A green called Slowdeath who, by all reports, was perfectly willing to carry him. At twenty-seven, Slowdeath died and Khallil the Great chose white Frostbite to be his mount. It was during this time that Khallil the Great used strategy to destroy the original Sisterhood. By far, one of his greatest achievements. At thirty-six, he chose red Flashfire, doing what no Darkrider has done before or since and managing to ride one Wyvern of every colour.   Khallil the Great's posterity has been hard to track. After a raid on a far away and unnamed continent, Khallil the Great came back with a human woman of unknown parentage and apparently high birth. Her full name was never known, but she went by the name of 'Meredith'. Speculation as to her origin continues to this day. Khallil the Great is known to have fathered seven children by Meredith. The first, a son called Juliano, was born when Khallil the Great was still at the tender age of seventeen. Juliano was one of only two of his children to die of old age. Of the other five, three died while still in childhood and two died in battle.   Khallil the Great's own death was tragic. As he lay wounded on the field of battle, Flashfire would not let a healer get near him. Khallil the Great was forced to fight for his life against one of his own mounts. The battle was fierce, and at the end of it, Flashfire, whom he had trusted, devoured Khallil the Great. But so mightily had he fought that Flashfire died from the wounds received by Khallil the Great's hands only a day later.

Accomplishments & Achievements

He's the only person to have ever bonded with one of every type of wyvern.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

When the Vaen arrived on Keverynn, they hid their ships in the Alastean island chain before they made their eventual migration to the mainland. Some stayed behind to monitor the ships and protect them. Knowledge of these ships and the true origin of the Vaen is passed down through their generations so they don’t forget who they are or where they came from.   Fast forward to the era of Khallil the Great. He had a fascination for old books and couldn’t quite figure out why there was no mention of the Vaen prior to the fifth century. Determined to find out why he set out to capture a Vaen and interrogate it.   It wasn’t long before he had one, a young adult male. Khallil questioned him mercilessly but found the answers to be deeply unsatisfying. While they were plausible, he felt that the Vaen was hiding something. To prevent the Vaen from telling others what he was up to, he killed him, feeding the body to his wyvern.   It took several tries before he got the answers he wanted, that the Vaen properly came from another world called Tanviyer. This boggled his mind. How could such a thing even be possible? Once he had the general location of the islands hiding the Vaen ships it was put to death and again fed to his wyvern.   Thus the wheels began to turn in Khallil’s mind. What would it be like to extend the might and influence of the Darkriders to another world? Could these ships go to worlds other than this Tanviyer? Were there other worlds with other people that could be reached and conquered?   The trick, of course, would be to get to the ships. If the Vaen’s description was to be believed—and after so much torture Khallil didn’t doubt it—then these islands were somewhere in the ocean on the far side of the territory controlled by the Dragonlords. In order to get there he would not only need to cut through them but the much hated Sisterhood of Sword and Sorcery as well.   To do either of those things would require more than the few armies he had at his command. It would necessitate an unprecedented unification of the Darkriders. He need not tell them about the Vaen’s origins and his true motivation—not at first anyway. For most the call to battle to take down the oppressive Sisterhood and launching an all out assault against the Dragonlords would be motivation enough.   With that in mind, Khallil set out to unite the fractured Darkrider clans and armies, creating the coalition that exists to modern day. The first sign of this on the other side of the Vileshte River was the attack on the Sisterhood and its subsequent defeat.

Social

Family Ties

According to historical records, he had a wife who went by the name Meredith, though it's unclear if that was her real name or not. He's known to have fathered seven children by her. The first, a son called Juliano, was born when Khallil was seventeen. Juliano was one of only two of his children to die of old age. Of the other five, three died while still in childhood and two died in battle.   Of his immediate family, no records exist. It's believed that his Sutaran family has disowned him.
