Ericryth River (eəɪkrɪð rɪvə)

Ericryth River is a place of mystery, legends, and occasionally rampant tourism. It is located slightly west of King's Keep, a small settlement in the middle of a forest. The river is known for its crystal riverbed, which is where many of the legends surrounding the place come from. If you travel up to the source of of the river (A long journey involving climbing a mountain, avoiding rapids, and enduring snowstorms) you would find a spring hidden away with a statue of an unknown deity.

Localized Phenomena

The river appears to glow at night from the pale, smooth crystals that cover the bottom of the river. Some say just say that the crystals reflect light and that's it, while others believe that the crystals are enchanted, therefore the water is as well. These people often tell stories of a legend about the river, saying that if you toss a silver coin into a KirKirm's mossy home from the eastern riverbank you will be granted a wish. This hasn't been proved yet, although people keep trying to get their wish.

Fauna & Flora

KirKirm

The river itself is populated by small fish called KirKirm, a type of bottom-feeding fish that lives in clumps of moss as protection from predators. They are slightly spherical and iridescent and are sometimes called Pearlfish, or just "The Orbs".

Luminous Moss

This type of moss grows on the riverbed. It is spongy to the touch, and the tips glow softly after being exposed to sunlight. It is the preferred home of the KirKirm.

Dragonfish

A medium-sized fish that hunts down smaller fish such as KirKirm. They are long and sleek, with green-blue scales. Don't put them in a tank with other fish that can fit in their mouth.

History

Beyond the other legends of the modern day about Ericryth River, an older tale hides. According to this old myth, the crystals at the bottom of the river were crafted into a necklace to contain a massive amount of magic by an unknown deity who hid it away in the Celestial Library. If it fell into the wrong hands, the Three Realms would be at risk. Those who know of this tale are few and far between, and congratulations. You have now joined their ranks.
Be careful, many seek this information, and you mustn't tell them ANYTHING. Stay on your guard, and be safe.

Lots of good hooks in there - hidden statue of a deity, pieces of a crystal necklace, secret knowledge, rumors of magic.
