Volandova

For many years Mordentum attempted to control the lands of the frontier. Imperial ships and troops from Tar Tafnen and Bas Vinca regular raided the lands along the western and north shores of the frontier. After many years Mordentum established an outpost northwest of Radusa and began fortifying it. It seemed that Mordentum was on the move to conquer the frontier.   A warlord of skill and charisma, named Josif Durran, arose from the city state of Rosman and managed to unite many under his banner against Mordentum. Troops from all over the frontier answered to his call and came to fight the great evil that was Mordentum. In a short time Durran declared himself king of the country of Volandova and united the lands of the frontier under a single banner. He created states within the kingdom and set the most powerful warriors in the area as the duke of that state.   Despite the number of men that Volandova could wield, they were uncoordinated and would often fight against each other. In an attempt to pull Mordentum troops away from the continent King Durran gathered the most unruly of clans and sent them to Mordentum to raid the lands north of Tar Tafnen, promising them they could keep whatever they plundered and offering them lands and titles should they survive.   These clans were soon raiding all along the northern border of Mordentum causing disruption deep into the empire. The Volandova raiders would either strike into Mordentum themselves or drive the non-human creatures living in the mountains and forests into the empire.   Raids along the northern border were not unheard of within Mordentum, prior to these events, but they were rare. The nobility and adventurers would often travel into the wilderness, hunting and culling the threats that would move into an area. The frequency and ferocity of the raiding Volandovans was not something that Mordentum was prepared for.   In response the empire began moving troops from other districts to the northern borders, and deploying ships to patrol the straights. They withdrew many of their forces from the outpost on the western shore of Volandova, leaving only a token force to hold the position.   It was at this point that empire began its collapse as district after district was abandoned or seceded. The outpost on Volandova was overrun and Mordentum had lost it's footing. The new kingdom, still unsteady, was on its way to becoming a regional power. King Durran held a gathering of his dukes in the capital of Astarga.   In what many think was an act of vengeance by the Empire a force believed to be made of of Magi and Drakes of the Ebon Flame assaulted the gathering. In the ensuing melee the king and all of the dukes were slain. The palace was left in ruins and parts of the city were in flames, victims of several rampaging fire elementals. The event, now referred to as "The Beheading of Volandova", was the last known external assault known to have been carried out by Mordentum.   In the absence of King Durran and the dukes he'd given power the states of Volandova broke apart and began warring amongst themselves for lands and resources.

  • Bor Zitel - Lacking established methods of communications the king of Volandova created a network of fast messengers that would carry information, via fast horse, between states. The Bor Zitel were excellent horsemen, survivalists, and were literate.
