Law & Order in Brighthold

Brighthold's laws are rigidly enforced to maintain order and protect the city's citizens. The worship of evil gods is strictly forbidden, with the prevailing belief that such practices lead to corruption and chaos. Accused individuals face a trial before a council of seven elected magistrates, but they are not granted legal representation during the proceedings. Here, they are arraigned, tried, and sentenced, with the council holding the power to determine their fate. While there is a jail within the city, Caelia's prison lies far to the north, where more severe offenders are confined.   Unfortunately, not all magistrates are equally just. Some maintain integrity and act honestly, upholding the law without prejudice. However, others succumb to the influence of various aristocrats, leading to corruption and potential biases in their decisions. The delicate balance between authority and power dynamics in Brighthold's legal system can create complexities and challenges in ensuring justice prevails for all its citizens.   The royal council retains authority over the appointment of all government officials, including magistrates and the city watch commander. However, the guilds possess significant influence, as they elect their representatives to serve on the royal council and have control over trade within the city.
