Nithes

This breed of bird are exceptionally fast, but flightless (they can glide, but not when encumbered by a rider). 

They are the predominant mount of the deserts for high-speed travel and are easy to domesticate and train. 

The Nithe has a slow and descending dove-like "coo". It also makes a rapid, vocalized clattering sound with its beak (clicks).

They also have the unique evolutionary trait of a second eye lid (ref crocodile second lids) that enable them to see in sandstorms while protecting their corneas.
