Giren Poisoning

Transmission & Vectors

This poisoning is caused by overexposure to the titular metal, Giren, via absorption through the skin, ingestion, or inhalation. It is possible for someone with giren dust on their body or clothes to poison others by making contact with them without cleaning themselves first. In this way, children may be exposed to the metal and are far more susceptible to poisoning that adults.

Symptoms

Giren poisoning has short and long term physical and psychological symptoms.   Physical, short term:
  • joint pain
  • headaches
  • shaking
  Physical, long term:
  • loss of fine motor control
  • spasms
  • infertility
  • internal bleeding
  Psychological, short term:
  • short term memory loss
  • mood swings
  • depression
  Psychological, long term:
  • long term memory loss
  • severe mood swings
  • confusion
  • mania/hysteria
  • severe depression

Treatment

There is no treatment for gerin poisoning, though it may be possible to ease some of the symptoms.

Prognosis

The shaking, spasms, and psychological effects of the poisoning combine into an apparent madness, especially as the condition worsens. Victims are physically unsteady and visibly quake and spasm. More and more frequently, they forget what they were doing, where they are, and the identities of the people around them. Mood swings increase in frequency and severity, triggering both at random and at the slightest provocation. Internal bleeding begins in the final stages of the poisoning. Blood can be seen in the victim's urine, stool, and saliva first. Victims have sometimes been known for bloody manic smiles or hysterically crying tears of blood. Many victims are driven to suicide by the psychological stresses of the condition before the internal bleeding can kill them.

Prevention

Wearing masks, strong ventilation in enclosed areas, and covering exposed skin are the only means of preventing gerin poisoning, but these are least effective for miners who deal with the metal in underground tunnels with poor ventilation.
