Giren

Properties

Material Characteristics

Giren is a forest green, shiny metal.

Physical & Chemical Properties

It is soft, malleable and pliable. It is also relatively light. It is also an effective channeling material for aurum.

History & Usage

History

Giren has been used infrequently in alchemy since it could be successfully removed from the earth. Its use has increased with the development of smelting techniques that remove the impurities from the metal. The crafting of jewelry from giren is a relatively new development, beginning some time in the last sixty to eighty years.

Everyday use

Giren is a common alchemical catalyst, used because it is a potent channeling ingredient for aurum. More recently it has also been used in all manner of fine personal jewelry from piercings to necklaces to rings.

Refinement

While giren can be used in its raw state, alchemists the world over dispute its effectiveness when using it so. It is refined by heating chunks of its raw ore in a large metal tub until the lighter pure metal rises to the top and the heavier impurities (trace amounts of other metals) sink to the bottom. A spigot in the bottom of the tub is opened and the impurities are drained until only pure giren remains. This process may be done multiple times to maximize the amount of pure metal that can be extracted.

Hazards

Giren is poisonous. It can be absorbed through the skin, ingested, or inhaled in dust during mining. Overexposure to giren leads to Giren Poisoning, a chronic and incurable ailment that can eventually lead to death.
