With the lessening demand for their legitimate work, many horseback messenger companies have returned to their historical roots as ad-hock adventuring companies. In these situations the Lettermasters are actually key to navigating the underground and highly regulated profession. They cultivate a network of contacts across broad social spheres to maintain their cover, sent people out where they need to be, and handle the general management of both.

As the highest point of contact in most horseback messener companies, the lettermasters usually take payment equal to that of their horseman peers. The individual tasks that the lettermasters are infinitely more complicated than that of a horseman but the courier can be required to risk life and limb to deliver their message. Aside from the potentially illicit aspects of being a lettermaster they are considered by the general public to be nothing more than clerks, albeit very good ones.
