Dwanar

WIP

Dwanar are a stoic but friendly species, known for carving out mountains and building vast subterranean cities. In past millennia the dwanar had dozens of cities linked through underground caverns and tunnels. Legends say the tunnels connected dwanar cities across incredible distances, even under oceans and crossing continents. More than any other, dwanar are known as stonemasons and artisans, with a natural intuition that guides them when they work with earthen materials.   Unfortunately, long before current historical records, the dwanar were engaged in a war against a race of goblins that somehow destroyed nearly every dwanar city except the only remaining metroplis; Glita Iss. Other cities and fortresses survived the goblin attacks but over time, with reduced populations and ineffective defenses, the dwanar were forced to retreat and consolidate their numbers behind heavier and heavier walls.   Generally, if a thing is not broken, a dwanar will not fix it or change it; and if it is broken, they fix it rather than replace it. At the same time, dwanar’ meticulous, near-obsessive attention to detail and durability in their craftsmanship makes that a rare occurrence, as the things they make are built to last. As a result, buildings, artwork, tools, housewares, garments, weapons, and virtually everything else made by dwanar still sees regular use at an age when such items would be relegated to museum pieces, dusty antique shelves, or junkyard fodder by other races. Taken together, these traits create the impression that dwanar are a race frozen in time.   Ancient tales speak of entire underground continents dotted with abandoned dwanar cities full of functional tools and supplies, and even technology lost to modern civilization.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Dwanar are a short and stocky race, and stand over a foot shorter than most humans. With broad shoulders and hips, and barrel chests, old dwanar culture prides itself on the long length of their hair, and often decorate their thick, dreadlocked hair with metal beads and intricate braids.   More modern dwanar, or those living among humans, often choose to shave their heads to clearly display thier dwanar features. More than one 300 year old dwanar has been mistaken for a human child and it's not usually a pleasant encounter.

Civilization and Culture

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Dwanar and orcs have long dwelt in proximity to one another, and share a history of violence as old as both races. Dwanar generally distrust and shun half-orcs. They find elves, gnomes, and heblin to be too frail, flighty, or “pretty” to be worthy of proper respect. It is with humans that dwanar share the strongest link, for humans’ industrious nature and hearty appetites come closest to matching those of the dwanar ideal.
