Tone Key Crystals

Properties

Material Characteristics

Tone key crystals are translucent magenta crystals that naturally occur in many different sizes and shapes and can also be altered to a desired shape and size. They emit different vibrational frequencies, based on size and shape, and give off a faint glow when activated.

Geology & Geography

They only form in the synaptical routes which are the "tunnels" between portals, located in the space between spaces, that ships traverse to get from one place to another more quickly. This makes them difficult to obtain because it is dangerous for people to remain within the synaptical routes long enough to locate and harvest the tone key crystals. Special equipment is required to survive undamaged there for more than the moment that it usually takes between entering one portal and exiting the next.

History & Usage

Discovery

Tone key crystals were introduced to the worlds of Kantostara long ago by the Singers of Songs who taught the people how to use them in conjuction with dentrittium to generate the axionic energy that is commonly used to power most space ships.

Everyday use

Tone key crystals are arranged within a matrix into which is inserted a canister of dentrittium. The vibrations of the crystals excite the particles of dentrittium thus generating the axionic energy that powers the space ship. Different sizes and shapes of tone key crystals as well as different arrangements within the matrix are used to power different functions of the ship.   There is also a special scepter shaped tone key crystal that is embeded into the helm control of the ship. This crystal works with the energetic frequency of the pilot, and it also signals the portals when to open and close as well as how large an aperture is needed. Unlike other tone key crystals, this one cannot be artificially altered. It must be naturally occuring as a scepter shape in order to function properly.

Hazards

Tone key crystals don't cause any permanent physical harm. However, if a person is in close proximity, without any shielding, to the large matrices used for the propulsion of ships, the vibrations will cause temporary feelings of nausea, disorientation and skin sensations similar to having insects crawling all over you.
