Driftvine
Driftvine is a species of fruit bearing plant that grows in the vacuum of space. The plant got its name from its habit of floating through the galaxy untethered although some varieties of driftvine do eventually anchor themselves to asteroids or other structures sending delicate roots into microscopic cracks. Some will even root into carefully prepared starship frameworks to grow into starseed vessels.
As amazing as the fruit is, it's the crystalline seed at its center that is most highly prized, particularly when it come from the starseed variety. This unique variety will weave around the structural frame of a starship and grow to become a starseed vessel. Upon maturity, it will seek a humanoid pilot and form a symbiotic relationship. It is said that the seeds of this variety retain memory fragments from every shared life with every pilot in the entire lineage of the parent plant.
Description
In the absence of gravity, driftvines grow outward in every direction producing graceful spirals and intricate geometric patterns that often glow softly from absorbed cosmic radiation. Their leaves look like translucent sails stretched between flexible crystalline veins, and each leaf continuously shifts its pigmentation to match the spectrum of nearby stars. Their roots spiral inward toward the center of the plant and, over time, weave themselves into an intricate living knot known as the heart which is thought to be the central archive where the memories of everything the plant has witnessed and experienced are stored.Fruit
Driftvine fruit is translucent, comes in various colors, and has a subtle bioluminescent glow. It's shape is slightly ovoid, and it's about the size of an average adult's fist. Its sweet nutrient rich flesh is soft and tastes like chilled honey with a slight mineral zing like a rain soaked stone, but it's best not to eat too much as large quantities can be toxic.
