Personal history

Vastan Mollox, the only son of the 7th Baron of Laxeor, was not raised in a pleasant environment at home. His father was a disreputable gambler, womanizer, and drunkard, with almost no scruples whatsoever. His mother died when he was six years old, her ill health of long duration. She was the daughter of a merchant and received a terrible shock when the man she eloped with and married turned out to be after nothing but her fortune.   Vastan stayed out of his father's way, entertaining himself without much trouble. His father, who often forgot he existed, never sent him to school, even though it was typical for a lad to be sent to school by the time he was eleven. The only time his father paid any attention to him was at the end of every week when he questioned Vastan's tutor to make sure Vastan was "behaving." The tutor, a man with no patience for young boys, only reported anything wrong with Vastan if Vastan bothered him in any way. To avoid the beating his father was sure to give him if he "misbehaved," Vastan usually just stayed out of the tutor's sight, making his education very rough.   When he was twelve years old, Vastan accidentally overheard his father agreeing to sell him to one of his debtors for three nights in exchange for his gambling debts. Vastan, deciding that he preferred living on the streets to such a life, went up to his room and jumped out his two-story window to avoid the servants who might report to his father. Thankfully, he landed on a bush, and although it was very thorny, it saved him from any broken bones. He made his way into the streets of Raris but began to worry he might be found either by his father or the debtor. So, he decided to make his way to another city. On the way, he met the lad who would become his best friend, a boy named Palith.   The two of them drifted from city to city, making their way through much of Skillia for the next two years. When a threat of war came to Skillia, the king sent a proclamation requesting all able-bodied men aged eighteen and older to join. Vastan saw one of the posters and, being able to read even if it was rough, read one of the advertisements encouraging the men to join. It involved a promise of food and a warm bed, so Vastan and Palith promptly made their way to the enlistment office, lied about their age, and were sworn into the army. There were no questions asked by the officer, who was more interested in fighters than in their ages.   When he joined the army, Vastan was a small lad, undernourished and overworked. However, he thrived on the army life and began to grow... and grow. It was one of the soldiers' favorite stories that when Vastan was seventeen, the king of Castronia invited all the soldiers to a feast in honor of the treaty between them and Skillia. Vastan took a seat, and it collapsed underneath him in the great hall in front of thousands of people. Vastan himself was unbothered by the incident and the amusement of the soldiers, for despite his rather cynical viewpoint on life, he was generally very good-natured.   The only person in the army who knew he was the heir to a barony was Palith, for Vastan never saw the point of telling everyone. When he was twenty-one, a private detective found him in Castronia in a makeshift camp and informed him that his father was dying.   It was Palith who convinced Vastan to go back instead of just refusing to return. He came back only a week before his father died, and when he inherited the barony, he found it riddled with debts and debtors with threatening ways and means of getting their money. The tenants had long since deserted their houses, and the cottages still standing were in desperate need of repair. Vastan, once again under Palith's convincing, decided to attend a ball nearly a year after he took over the barony to see if there was anyone who would be willing to marry him for his title... for their money.   While taking some fresh air in the garden, a man hired to threaten him brandished a knife. Lady Amelitha Derrason, the daughter of the Duke of Montague, who was well-trained in knife-throwing, managed to stop the man and offered to marry Vastan—not for his title, but so that she could rescue him.
