Magical Locations

Magic comes in three forms.
  • Magic found and utilized in crystal form
  • Magic abilities a person is born with. Commonly referred to as Inborn or Changed (in some parts of Aguara).
  • Magical locations throughout the world where magic interacts uncontrollably with the region.
  There are four major magical locations, all mountain ranges, where the crystals and stones have magical effects on the immediate environment surrounding them.

Geography

Singing Coast

Magic = Sound Loud
The Singing Coast is located on the eastern side of the Morendra Mountain range on the Western Continent. The entire region is claimed by the Belalto Kingdom. The unique magic of this region is sound based due to the cliffs of exposed Thelodot (Tamadena in the local language). These crystals have a high rate of vibration and create a constant sound in the region. The Belalto people have learned to manipulate the crystals through the use of their voices. They can manipulate the weather (dissipate or create storms) and other forms of vibrational effects. There are many tropical storms a year that require careful manipulation by the inhabitants.

Regional Race

The Belalto. Large pointed ears and strong lungs. Culture is focused on singing and the voice. (Slang: Bards or Elfs)

Regional Species

Gamayin (aka Harpies or Wraiths).

Regional Crystal/Stone

Tuning crystals made of Thelodot are mined in this region and exported to the rest of the continent.

Drake Burg

Magic = Gravity Less
The Drake Burg mountain range is a large and impossibly high mountain range that runs from the border of Sholesen in the western continent, to the Black Teeth north of the Dukana Empire in the East Continent. The unique magic of this region is the lighter gravity. It causes an increase in size to all inhabitants and thus regional mutations to adapt over time.

Regional Race

The Drakar. Monarchy of the same name. Culture is deeply meshed with Dragons. (Slang: Giants)

Regional Species

Dragons.

Regional Crystal/Stone

Eterine - Stones that float because they defy gravity all together. Only found in the heart of the Drakar region and closely guarded.

Elcaio

Magic = Gravity More
To the South-West of the Dukana Empire are the Volcanic Islands of Elcaio, which the majority of Golums call home. It is also the Eastern gateway to the Prymese Commonwealth. The unique magic of this region is the heavier gravity. It causes an decrease in size to all inhabitants and thus regional mutations to adapt over time.

Regional Race

The Thaqil. Diminutive stature but very dense bodies, that withstand breakage. (Slang: Dwarfs)

Regional Species

Gollums.

Regional Crystal/Stone

Tsuyide - A stone of immense weight and density in small quantities. Used for weapons throughout the Prymese Commonwealth.

Serpents Teeth

Magic = Sound Less
The northern most province of the Dukana Empire is called Siadda, in which lies the Serpents Teeth mountain range. The unique magic of this region is the lack of sound caused by the sound absorbing crystals (Optolite) found in these mountains. Near silence permeates the region which causes the inhabitants to relay on visual cues and vibrations - thus regional mutations to adapt over time.

Regional Race

The Siadda. Overly large eyes and small bony ears to aid in detecting vibrations. Cultural language is sign based. (Slang: Ninjas)

Regional Species

Sea Serpents.

Regional Crystal/Stone

The crystal Optolite is not mined. It is considered sacred by the locals and used in special ceremonies only.

I like the duality of the magics in the regions, and the fact that there's a unique magic to each region. An alto is a loud singer, if I recall correctly, was that an influence on the names of the Belalto?

Yes that was definitely an influence in the name. Thanks for the comment.

Nice article! :) Maybe add in a map where the magical mountains are marked out? And links to the species? Anyway, nice work!

Thanks for the comment. I haven't finished creating all my articles yet but the plan is definitely to link the species to this article. I'll have to work on a world map with the mountain ranges. :)

I like the duality-idea and the fact that you chose forces to be your ways of magic instead of elements or usages as is usual. Since there are an "absorbing" and a "giving" and to both dualities, are they intertwined in some way? Like, is there a "gravity flow" that transports the Gravity Force from Drake Burg to Elcaio?

That sounds cool but I didn't build it that way. Though if you were to bring both aspects of a duality together things would get... interesting.
