The Great Calamity

The Great Calamity was the starting point of Kallevaar as it looks today. Before that it had a very different shape. It's inhabitants also changed, sometimes even quite drastically. Some species were wiped out entirely while others were only created by the calamity happening. There wasn't a region in the world that wasn't affected by it and many wild and magical phenomena were created through the great amounts of magic thrown around the world during it.

The Great Calamity was a time where chaos reigned everywhere and in many different forms. Quite a lot of landmass in the middle of Kallevaar was drowned by the waves due to the anger of the Goddess of the Sea towards the God of the Mountains. She claimed that he had taken too much of the world for the beings that live on land and not given enough space to those of her domain. He obviously disagreed and saved a part of that area with the help of Thanraal into the sky. This area is now known as the Sunwind Isle.

At the same time the Goddess of Fresh water also tried to claim a bit more for lakes and rivers to ensure that anyone living on land still had enough water that wasn't salty available to drink since the Goddess of the Sea swallowed big lakes and rivers when she drowned the land. To help with the flow of water she even allowed the impossible to be possible and with the help of the God of magic created the Lake of Swords.

While they were fighting about water and land Jaen, the God of Fire and Lightning decided to protect his favorite spot with a massive lightning storm so they would leave him alone and out of their endless fights. That lightning storm never left and lead to the founding of Kendolyn.

The great desert, which until this point had been very nice and habitable land, lost it's rain bringing winds because it had been a favorite place of the Goddess of Nature, who had angered the God of Wind by trying to force him into taking a stand against the fight between land and water than had killed so many of her protectees. This annoyed the god of winds enough to change the direction of the sea winds so instead of carrying the clouds over the desert against the mountains they will now cause rain above the sea on the "wrong" side of the mountains. The Goddess of Nature took this badly and let a plague come about which killed many organisms, mostly birds, which the God of Wind loved very much.

On the other end of the land, in a corner which had been a thriving trade island up until this point the dead souls tried to escape the Lands of the Dead. The God of Death tried to reign in the disaster that was being made of his realm due to the sudden influx of dead souls but many souls who died violent deaths wanted to return with wrath and forced through the layer between world in this spot because that is where it was thinnest. Some of the Infernals, who's main job was helping run the land of the dead followed them and returned almost all of them. They also had children with the local population and created a hotspot for Tieflings, which until this point had been very rare in Kallevaar.

During this time an entrance also appeared in the same area, possibly due to the fact that uncountable amounts of magic energy mixed with the constant traversing of the layer between worlds. It created a new magical realm full of new possibilities and dangers, which many belief to be a myth. The Starlight Seas entrance was hidden by the ages and is not as visible now as it was when it was first created, but any adventurer determined enough can still get there.

There were many smaller, less grand effects who's remnants can still be found all over Kallevaar and they still affect things, but the are too countless to list in this article. You will encounter them elsewhere if you keep an eye out.
