Town Speaker
In places like this, we don't have time for elections or public debates. Will they keep the town safe? Will they treat you with respect and dignity? Will they help bring in the catch of day? These are the things we do as speakers, not play political games. -Duvessa Shane, Speaker of Bryn ShanderAlso just called "Speakers", a Town Speaker is a public service title, similar to a Mayor. In contrast, a Speaker fulfills both a civil duty of managing the town, as well as a law-enforcement duty such as carrying out punishments on criminals. Speakers are also un-elected, usually rising to the role through gregariousness and capability.
Career
Qualifications
There are no official requirements to become a speaker, due to it's informal nature. Socially, however, usually speakers are capable, assertive, and exert some sort of desirable or admirable personality that a majority of the townsfolk resonate with.
Career Progression
Most speakers are brought into the role by the previous speaker, trying to carry on tradition of their values. Sometimes this is a parent/child, or mentor/protege relationship. Sometimes speakers die unexpectedly and a completely new individual takes on the mantle of Speaker.
Payment & Reimbursement
Traditionally, Speakers do not receive any monetary compensation. Most towns that Speakers work for have so little income that receiving a tax-paid salary would be infeasible.
Other Benefits
Speakers do gain political clout, for better or for worse. The social capital gained from being a popular speaker is very useful in the small towns where they rule.
