"'She was covered from neck to foot in armor, but she never made a sound. She took the bag of flowers before kneeling down to the body. When she saw I was watching, she smiled.'"
Marran is sometimes misunderstood as being the god of death. In truth, she is the guardian of souls passing through The Middle Path to their final resting place.
Marran's Doctrine
Marran takes very few clerics. She is a principality, but arguably one of the most burdened deities; generally she does not have the power to spare for mortal champions, but clerics of Marran are not unheard of. For most people, she serves as a comfort for those in mourning, who can be sure their passed loved ones are safe in her arms between realms. Her priests work to offer this comfort and provide sacred burial rites. Cemeteries that aren't already dedicated to another god are almost always tended by a priest of Marran. It's very common tradition to leave gifts to Marran with those who have died within the last few minutes, both as tribute to her and as prayer to keep a loved one safe. Some say this is superstition, but it's well-documented that if done quickly enough, the gifts left behind disappear. Jewelry, flowers, potpourri, and baked goods are common offerings.
The Keeper of Souls
Marran is usually depicted as a dark-haired woman in heavy armor, wielding a sword and shield, which is what garnered the title "The Final Guardian." For all her teachings of peace and solace, it does raise the question: what is she protecting those passed souls from? Her placement in The Pillar of Paths is also completely theoretical; nobody knows for sure where her affiliations lie because she is only ever met on the Material plane, and if anybody's asked, they haven't gotten an answer.
