Baron Kalakash
Between the years 936 and 944 the shipping lanes of Caervil and Malmor came under threat from a pirate fleet headed by a notorious figure who went by the name of Baron Kalakash. The name was likely a pseudonym (being similar to the The Spice Lands' term for a giant squid), and the title was certainly false as though the man had a noble bearing he claimed no allegiance to any House.
At first a single ship was under Kalakash's control, but over the period of his activity he added captive vessels to his fleet and they grew so powerful that trade was heavily disrupted at great cost to the merchants of Malmor and Caervil. Hunter flotillas accompanied the merchant ships but Kalakash was not deterred, and he displayed a mastery of naval tactics that allowed him to triumph over his enemies or evade encounters that proved too dangerous.
A vast bounty was placed on his head, and many eager fortune-seekers set out to track him down, but to no avail. In 944 a ship known to be of Kalakash's fleet sailed, seemingly without crew, into a harbour in Caervil and moored there. Soldier boarded the vessel cautiously and found it empty and abandoned, the only thing notable was a thick leather swordsman's gauntlet in crimson, known to be Kalakash's, pinned to the captain's desk with a dagger, underneath which was a note saying simply "For the King"
The mystery of Kalakash's identity and motives was never solved, nor were his crews and fleet ever seen again.
