A foreign merchant
This merchant, likely a southerner from beyond the sea, was approached by Theresa Mellaniphe, who wanted to trade some of her master's produce for milk of the poppy and other medicines. The merchant initially wanted sexual favors, but was eventually persuaded to make the trade in exchange for Theresa's marvelous honey. He gave her a small quantity of the milk in exchange for wine, and a lotus flower for the honey.
