Festival of the Snows

The Gnomes have a delightful tradition, around the time of Emerastide, known as the Festival of the Snows. You can best see this spectacle in a Gnome Village. The date is variable, but the first heavy snowstorm after the 12th of Icecrowning becomes a day of festival for all. Shops close, families gather, and the festival is set.   The first half of the day is dedicated to building giant snow forts. The gnomes divide into two teams, and each one builds a structure of snow that is facing the other. Those who do not wish to participate set up bonfires and bring food and drink for cold little builders. The ingenious gnomes come up with all sorts of designs and fortifications with snow.   These elaborate structures are needed, because after a communal meal, the kids and all willing adults engage in a snowball fight of epic proportions. One will see military strategy, bold heroism, and clever seige tactics all used in the name of storming one fort or another. The rules are somewhat loose, but it is on an honor system. If you are "killed" by a snowball, you leave the field. Last gnome standing wins.   While this frivolity is taking place, the other adults are circulating around the bonfires, chatting with friends and relatives and catching up with neighbors. If it is not too cold, some music might break out, leading to an impromptu dance. The food provided is all things best served chilled, but the beverages are served hot from a nearby house. Cider for the young ones, mulled wine for their elders.   It is a small, unplanned affair, but the gnomes look forward to it to break the monotony of winter. After the epic battle, children who still have energy may make snow people or other diversions, but most are too worn out to complain when told that the festival is over, and it's time for bed. The gnomes work together to clear up the days' leavings, and all bid each other goodnight. It is a charming spectacle to witness, or even take part in!
