Remmy Sullivan Character in Jewels of Lockhinge | World Anvil

Remmy Sullivan

Servant of House Thriyan

"Remmy opens the door to yell at them to drink water, because Remmy can't love without yelling."
— Stick

Physical

As a half-dragon, Remmy has a few physical oddities. Most of the right side of their face appears human, with a one brown eye and light mottling of black scales down near their chin. The left side of their face looks more like that of a dragonborn, including a different set of teeth and a sunken, bright green eye. The pattern continues unevenly down the rest of their body, with their right arm and left leg covered in dark scales and the opposite limbs looking mostly human. If they ever stood upright they would walk with a slight limp, but they spend so much time hunched over that, at this point, the difference in their step is nearly undetectable.   Their dark-brown hair is cut unevenly and varies in length, but they try to keep it long enough to hide their face. On top of that, they stay buried in their hood unless they're comfortable with present company (or someone bullies them into taking it off). They've been known to wrap their dragon limbs up in fabric or bandages to try and hide their scales, especially when they don't know how well the locals will take to their half-dragon appearance.   From their time working in direct service to the Thriyan household, they've adapted a quiet tone and nonobtrusive body language for whenever they're trying to stay out of perceived danger. However, among trusted friends they loosen up considerably and reveal that they're secretly slouchy, sarcastic, and often the first to start yelling about something for any number of reasons.

Personality

Remmy has always felt like an outsider. When they were young, their appearance was met with veiled distress from humans and unveiled pity from dragonborn. They struggled to keep their father's attention and, once he died, struggled to cope with serving the single richest family in Lockhinge while they, themselves, had nothing. Remmy is not the only oddity in the city, but they've internalized their hardships as if they were.   As such, they've got a lot of unresolved anger. While they try to keep a cap on it for their own survival, they unwittingly vent it through sarcasm and suspicion. When pushed, they escalate a little too quickly to intimidation, even violence. Emotional wounds take a long time to heal, and once they've been slighted, they're slow to forgive and will never forget. They will try to keep strangers at a distance for as long as they can, uncomfortable with intimacy and always braced for the inevitable rejection.   However, anyone who truly gains their trust is quick to discover a different side of Remmy. Curious and surprisingly optimistic, they're always up for a challenge or a new adventure. They have a deep interest in the natural world and a soft spot for animals. They love trying new food, but are just as enthusiastic about their old favorites. They have a lot of fears and hang-ups in regards to themselves, but they would jump up to defend a friend no matter what the other person says they're at fault for.   As their experience outside of Lockhinge grows, Remmy is beginning to show a little more self-confidence when it comes to their needs and their worth as a person. Being shown small amounts of kindness from many kinds of people has helped them shake off a few of their old assumptions, and they remain excited for what the future holds for them and their friends.

History

Remmy spent their early childhood in Lockhinge. Their memories of their father are vague, but they remember that he had a drinking problem and don't think back on his memory very kindly. He passed away when they were seven. They've never met their mother on account of her being an extremely dangerous Black Dragon whom, supposedly, threatened to eat them after they were born.   After their father's death, they were taken in by House Thriyan as a servant to the estate. At the time, they were coincidentally the same age as one Tekhetsio Thriyan . Despite technically being their boss, the young lord would come pester them during the day as if they were friends; having very few people to talk to, Remmy grew to appreciate his company and the lack of judgement towards their station and appearance. As they grew older, they started causing trouble together and bailing each other out in the aftermath - a bond that has caused Remmy to realize their feelings for Tek may be more than just a simple friendship.   Now reaching into young adulthood, Remmy has started accompanying Tek on his journeys across the Scarlet Kingdom. Their contract was recently re-written to include paid wages and personal rights (two things Remmy is still struggling to adjust to), with Tek as the primary owner and overseer of their arrangement. However, this change came with some revelations in the form of a letter from their father, written shortly before he died. Remmy had originally been led to believe that their service to House Thriyan was to pay off their father's massive gambling debts--but his words seem to describe something more intentional, noting that he was leaving them in the care of Zhaska Thriyan in good faith of her ability to take care of Remmy.
