The undine are a species of creatures that live in bodies of water across Ivryia, with various body types noted among the population.

Basic Information

Anatomy

There are various body types for the undine, with some having a body type similar to that of mermaids (with various types of tails that take after other aquatic life), while others have a more humanoid body type, with legs in place of a tail.

Ecology and Habitats

The undine live is most natural bodies of water, including rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, springs, and even on occasion some streams.

Behaviour

The behaviours of the Undine are affected most by their place of origin. Fresh water undine come into contact with terrestrial life more often, and thus are more accepting and jovial when interacting with outsiders. Undine found in rivers and lakes are very mischievous and playful with others, showing their affection with small practical jokes that cause little to no harm to others. However, these jokes can go a bit too far on occasion, with the undine forgetting the physical limitations of terrestrial beings - typically the inability to breathe underwater - inadvertently leading to the drowning and death of those that they simply intended to play with. Saltwater undine have more variation in personality than their freshwater counterparts, with those that live in coastal areas or along popular trade routes across Ivryia being more open to interacting with others, and those in more remote areas in the open sea being less inclined to reach out to other beings.

Interspecies relations for the undine are dictated by their place of origin, with freshwater and coastal saltwater undine being more open to interacting with other beings due to proximity, and saltwater undine that live deep beneath the surface of the ocean or in isolated areas being less the enthused to interact with strangers.

Conservation Status

The undine are not under particular danger of becoming endangered, but there are notable groups of people that hunt and poach the creatures for their perceived holistic attributed in folk medicine.
