Adenagend

The human city of Adenagend, ruled by the Angenvir Royal Family.

Created by Burrows Red. Used in the Book Club D&D Campaign.
"Adenagend was a long way from Restuchen, but coming here as a small child felt like stepping into another plane of existence. It is quiet, beautiful and far away from the rest of the world; a haven for all who live here." - Queen Kata Angenvir
The city of Adenagend was founded by two citizens of @Harringfield; Dorian Angenvir and Festus Thistlefoot. Once the two adventured into the Realms after Ripo vanquished Bryldol, the pair travelled far into the new lands and stumbled across the land and mountains that would then become Adenagend. Upon the ruins of old Lazlethi buildings, the city was built.   Many people from Harringfield eventually settled in the region. Festus and Dorian ruled the city together, their families both raised to aristocracy after the exploits of the pair. A few years following the founding of the city in 48 DR, the King of Harringfield attended and claimed he saw Dorian risen to the ranks of the Gods themselves, as King and deity. At this proclamation, Dorian protested that he could not be King without Festus by his side. By that afternoon, a proposal for the Adenagend’s Royal Advisors was made, and Dorian was unanimously was crowned as a King.   Festus was content with serving as Dorian’s advisor. During his time as advisor, he built many large and important structures throughout Adenagend and beyond. Namely, the twin spires; one in Adenagend’s town central, and the other a day’s ride from Orbarrow, in the Frostlace Mountains. The one in the city became known as The Life Spire and the one in the mountains became The Death Tower. Both towers served as intellectual hubs for the people with the skills to create great things. The Life Spire was burned down when a few gnomish inventors sought to use the information and ideas they’d gathered there to work on awful, strange creatures   Following Dorian’s coronation, rumours circulated amongst the town that something had changed. While the mountains around them always blanketed them in fog and moisture, it felt as though plants grew easier, and the world felt more alive. Some believed the King made some pact with the land, in his vows as monarch.

Government

The city is ruled by the Angenvir Royal Family. Queen Kata Angevin is responsible for overseeing the operations of the city with the guidance of her advisors. The city guard are responsible for upholding the laws of the city, predominantly focused on the main district. They are empowered to act with the best interests of the city in mind. Another guard, the Royal Guard, survey the noble district. They work under the direct command of the Queen.

Defences

There are a number of defences available within the city of Adenagend if they were to be attacked.   The city is set beside a large mountain range, treacherous for armies large or small. There are two entrances to the city, heavily guarded. Beside the gates are large fans that are designed to keep the surrounding fog from entering the city walls, however they can be turned up to reduce the available air outside of the city walls. While it is not inherently fatal, it does make it harder for people to breathe.   Furthermore, the walled noble district can be closed off to the rest of the city, providing a refuge oof the city were seized.

Infrastructure

One of the prime accomplishments of Adenagend is the city walls, fitted with large fans that keep the fog entirely outside of the city. Otherwise, the city is fitted with roads, large and functional buildings, and sewers, for a start.

Architecture

Due to the relentless fog that surrounds the city, the walls and buildings are made of dark grey stone mined from the mountains nearby. As a relatively new city, there are constant additions and developments being made to the city, meaning the citizens have accustomed to scaffolding surrounding buildings and partially blocking the streets.

Geography

Adenagend is built into the base of a mountain to the north of the Diminishing Realms. A small lake emerges from the mountains and provides naturally filtered drinking water for the city. Outside of the walls, there are large fields for farming food, fruits, and animals. The city is surrounded by dense trees and forests that provided a natural barrier to anything approaching. The trees, ferns and animals are bright and loud and display phenomenal arrays of colour.

Natural Resources

The mountains provide a large quantity of dark stone that is used for the buildings in Adenagend. The tropical, foggy climate provides a wide array of foods and animals to use to feed the town.

Author's Notes

Adenagend is designed to be the heart of the Realms. Despite its northern position, isolated from the greater Ostholos, it was the first settlement and the most established. The design for the city is influenced by large, defensible ancient cities built into the mountains; real or fictional.
