High Jarldom of Norþastr

Norþastr, officially known as the High Jarldom of Norþastr or simply "Deät Lun" - "The Land" by locals, is a sovereign state located in the far northern reaches of the world of Ithon. Known for its isolationist and pacifist policies, it is one of the oldest predominantly human nations in existence, dating back to the Early 2nd Era. The region is famed for its pristine natural landscapes, ancient tundra forests, and cultural adherence to peace and self-reliance.

Norþastr's people, the Norþari, are deeply connected to their land, viewing themselves as its stewards rather than its masters. Their society places a high value on harmony, tradition, and cooperation. The nation’s isolationist stance and self-sufficiency have preserved its way of life for centuries, despite the upheavals of the surrounding world.

Etymology

The name Norþastr is disputed. Scholars hypothesise that originates from the ancient Norric language, with its roots in "Farthest North". However, according to legend, the early clans who founded Norþastr named their land after the bright northern star that guided them through the Onura Desert during their migration to escape southern conflicts. The star was seen as a divine sign, leading them to a land where they could live in harmony with the harsh environment. Originating from the Ancient Norric "North Star" The term combines "Norþ" (north) and "Stjarna" (star)

Geography

Norþastr is the northernmost state in Ithon, bordered to the south by the Onura Desert and stretching far into the ancient tundra forests of the north. The land is dominated by rolling plains of permafrost, glacial rivers, and snow-clad taiga, making it one of the harshest yet most beautiful environments in the world.

The capital, Hjemmested, is situated at the fork of the River Freyt, a critical waterway. The city is renowned for its wood-and-stone architecture. It is often blanketed by snow but remains a hub of Norþari culture and governance.

The climate is predominantly subarctic, with long, harsh winters and brief, cool summers. The tundra forests to the north are ancient and mystical, said to be older than the High Jarldom itself. These forests are regarded with reverence, and many of them are protected by law.

Government

Norþastr is governed by a High Jarldom, where the High Jarl acts as the head of state, overseeing the nation’s laws and traditions. The High Jarl is supported by a Council of Jarls, composed of leaders from the various clans and regions. Decisions are made through consensus, reflecting the Norþari emphasis on unity and cooperation.

The society of Norþastr is built around clan structures, with each clan responsible for its own people, land, and resources. Community is paramount, and disputes are resolved through mediation rather than conflict. Military forces are almost nonexistent; instead, the High Jarldom relies on local militias for defense, though these are rarely called upon.

Economy

The economy of Norþastr is primarily subsistence-based, focused on fishing, hunting, and limited agriculture suited to the cold climate. Trade with southern nations is rare, as the Norþari prefer to be self-reliant. When they do trade, they exchange goods like fur, woodcrafts, and woven textiles, often sought for their exceptional quality.

The harsh conditions of Norþastr have bred a culture of thrift and innovation, with the people excelling at making the most out of limited resources. Despite their isolation, their craftsmanship is renowned across Ithon, and their goods occasionally make their way to distant markets.

Culture

The Norþari value peace, silence, and self-reliance. Their culture revolves around respect for nature, and many of their customs are tied to the rhythms of the land. Festivals celebrate the changing seasons, the return of migratory animals, and the resilience of their people against the northern elements.

The High Jarldom is deeply spiritual, with a belief system rooted in the worship of The Absolutes and reverence for Eloria and Tiriaana. Forests are seen as sacred, and it is said that ancient spirits dwell within them, watching over the Norþari people. Logging is strictly regulated, and only what is needed for survival is taken.

A unique aspect of Norþari culture is their mutualistic relationship with the giants who inhabit the ancient forests and mountains. These giants are rarely seen but are respected as part of the natural order. Norþari tales speak of the giants as ancient beings who predate even the founding of the High Jarldom.

While the Norþari and giants maintain a distant relationship, their interactions are largely peaceful and mutually beneficial. Giants have been known to assist in clearing blocked mountain passes or guiding Norþari hunters through treacherous tundra storms. In return, the Norþari leave offerings of food and crafted goods during harsh winters to show gratitude and respect. This symbiosis is reflected in Norþari mythology, where the giants are often portrayed as guardians of nature, standing as equals to the Norþari in their shared stewardship of the land. The High Jarl is traditionally sworn to uphold the ancient covenants with the Giants, ensuring that this delicate relationship remains intact for future generations.
