Celestial Mandate of Tentian

The Celestial Mandate of Tentian is an ancient and sprawling empire located on a vast peninsula defined by its mountainous spine, spiritual traditions, and isolationist history. It is home to a rich tapestry of cultures, with the Kitsune, Vanara, Tanuki, Tengu, and Humans living in relative harmony under the guidance of a divine imperial monarchy and the ever-present influence of Imperial Dragons. Tentian is the largest sovereign state on Ithon by landmass.

According to myth, Tentian was founded by the divine Kitsune Tsubasa, who unified the peninsula during the Dawn Era with the Mythical Founding of Tentian . Tsubasa became the first Celestial Emperor, establishing a dynasty that claims divine ancestry not only from Tsubasa but also from the Imperial Dragons, powerful beings revered as both protectors and manipulators of mortal affairs. These dragons continue to influence Tentian’s society, some acting as secret advisors, while others openly rule factions or manage territories. Tentian remains the oldest continuous state on Ithon.

Etymology

The name Tentian derives from the ancient Kitsune phrase Ten no Ming, meaning "Mandate of Heaven," signifying the divine authority under which the empire is ruled.

Geography

Tentian’s peninsula begins wide in the west and narrows as it extends into the ocean, creating natural barriers that reinforce its isolation. The central mountain range, the Tianjie Mountains, spans the entire length of the peninsula, dividing it into distinct regions, fertile valleys, and winding rivers characterize the eastern lowlands, while the western regions feature rugged cliffs and the imposing Great Wall of Tentian, built during the Twilight Era with The Isolation of Tentian.

Government

Tentian is governed by the Celestial Emperor, a divine monarch believed to be the living embodiment of heaven’s will and a descendant of both the divine Kitsune Tsubasa and the Imperial Dragons. The throne has been held by the same dynasty since the mythical Dawn Era, with the emperor serving as both a political and spiritual leader.

Beneath the emperor, the empire is administratively divided into Provinces, each overseen by a Zhugendhu, or Governor-Lord. Some dragons act as reclusive advisors, while others are openly revered as local rulers, adding a layer of mysticism to the empire’s hierarchy.

The emperor is advised by the Celestial Court, a council of spiritual leaders, scholars, generals, and administrators who uphold Tentian’s spiritual, strategic interests. This council includes dragons who represent their interests in imperial matters, maintaining a delicate balance between the dragons and mortal rule.

Though Tentian engages in limited trade and diplomacy, its policies remain rooted in isolationism. Foreign influence is carefully managed, and travellers to the empire are monitored to preserve its cultural integrity and spiritual purity.

Economy

The economy of Tentian is characterized by self-sufficiency, careful resource management, and selective trade. The empire’s fertile eastern valleys are the backbone of its agricultural output, producing abundant crops of rice, tea, and medicinal herbs. These staples are not only consumed domestically but are also integral to spiritual rituals and ceremonies.

The mountainous regions yield precious metals, jade, and rare gemstones, which are meticulously mined and crafted into intricate works of art, tools, and ceremonial objects. Tentian artisans are renowned for their skill in metalworking, pottery, and silk weaving, creating goods that are prized even beyond the empire's borders.

Selective trade is conducted with trusted foreign partners under strict imperial oversight. Exports include silk, tea, and finely crafted goods, while imports focus on materials or knowledge that align with the empire’s values. Trade is primarily conducted at two cities along the western border: Harunishi and Nishikyo. Ensuring that Tentian’s isolationist policies are upheld.

Culture

The culture of Tentian is deeply rooted in its spiritual traditions and the veneration of Imperial Dragons as celestial beings. The belief in harmony between heaven, earth, and dragonkind shapes the daily lives of its people. Central to this ethos is the Celestial Mandate, which ties the emperor’s divine authority to the prosperity and unity of the empire, and the vessel to keep balance between mortal, heavenly and draconic matters

This spiritual foundation permeates every aspect of life, from daily practices to grand ceremonies. Art, music, and storytelling play a significant role in preserving Tentian’s rich heritage. Traditional songs and dances are often performed during festivals and rituals, reflecting themes of nature, balance, and divine guidance. Calligraphy, poetry, and intricate craftsmanship are revered arts, serving both practical and ceremonial purposes.

The Festival of Celestial Concord is Tentian’s most sacred and celebrated event, held annually during the first full moon of spring. The festival honours the heaven, earth, and the Celestial Emperor who keeps this balance between them. The celebration begins with a grand procession led by priests and the Celestial Emperor themselves, carrying sacred relics through the streets of Kagayato. Citizens decorate their homes with lanterns and flowers, and music fills the air as dancers perform traditional rituals. The procession travels for days to the base of the Tianjie Mountains. As the procession arrives, thousands of paper lanterns are released into the sky, symbolizing prayers ascending to the heavens. The festival concludes with a ceremonial feast, uniting all citizens in gratitude and reverence for the Emperor's divine mandate that binds them together. This event is the only chance for an ordinary citizen to see the Celestial Emperor

Dragons’ dual nature—benevolent protectors and cunning manipulators—is a recurring theme in Tentian culture. While many revere them as guides and guardians, others remain wary, particularly in regions where dragons have been known to act with cruelty or self-interest. This tension adds complexity to the empire's cultural fabric, reflecting the intricate relationship between dragons and mortals.

Military

The military of Tentian is primarily composed of levy forces drawn from the local populace during times of need. These levies are trained in basic combat and defensive strategies, ensuring that every citizen has a role in the empire’s defense. To supplement the levies, Tentian relies on a core of professional soldiers, such as the Vanara Monk-Guards, who defend sacred sites. The Great Wall of Tentian continues to serve as a crucial defensive structure, with a dedicated force manning its fortifications. This combination of professional units and well-prepared levies enables Tentian to maintain its sovereignty while adhering to its principles.
