Faer Species in Isyra | World Anvil

Faer

The wilderness-dwelling Faer are humanoid creatures with keen senses and small stature. They are communal, and commonly hostile or ambivalent to other species around them. Myths of their origins claim that they were once human, but were taken and twisted by monstrous spirits. The Faer are intelligent and organized, capable of speech and complex thought.    Organizing themselves into small forested enclaves, Faer show simple yet effective use of magic and construction techniques to create hidden homes within their environment. As such the creatures can often be found living within trees, hollowed out logs, caves, or even beneath large mushroom caps. It is rare for Faer to build with processed materials, preferring instead to use existing structures.   Faer themselves are quite diverse, with a wide range of subspecies and physical attributes. This diversity is rarely seen in enclaves though, as most Faer prefer to stay with members of their own subspecies. Interactions between subspecies can often be violent or even predatory, particularly between smaller and larger subspecies.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Faer are typified by an anthropomorphic form. While generally smaller than their human counterparts, they have proportionately larger sensory organs; most subspecies have large eyes, ears, noses, hands, and feet. They have denser musculature than the average human, stretched across elongated bone structures.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All Faer have excellent hearing and sight, with a few subspecies being capable of echolocation and low-light vision. They see a greater array of color than humans, and can hear more subtle frequencies. The same can be said for their sense of smell, which can pick up a staggering amount of scents across great distances. Even their hands and feet are particularly sensitive. Faer process all this sensory information very quickly, and demonstrate lightning fast reactions.    In addition to their heightened senses, the Faer have the innate ability to consume Aetherial energies. Those that do regularly are generally larger and healthier than their counterparts. Many enclaves are located close to Aetheric rifts for this reason, and often these spots are fought over. As an added effect of this ability, magics that are cast in their presence can be reduced in strength, or not work altogether. Alternatively, some Faer can use the energies they consume to channel their own spells into existence.
