Gerald Kelgrove

Marquis of The Halsingly March

Gerald Kelgrove is the current Marquis of The Halsingly March, having been appointed by King Francis Leopold III in 844 I.R. The former Marquis had expressed a desire to abdicate the position due to age, and had no heir suitable to assume the title.   Gerald is one of the youngest nobles to be appointed Lord of the March, but in the six years since he took the seat he has worked to ensure a level of military order and readiness not seen for decades. In addition, he has found gainful employment for the soldiers under his charge in performing public works projects. He has also sent detachments of volunteers to join knights of the Orders-Militant of the Temple of the Divines on various missions. Finally, he has seen to the repair and manning of a number of small border forts in the sparse lands between Brisland and Teugoras, while communicating with the neighboring Kingdom that the intent is to reduce banditry for both of their benefits. These policies have greatly reduced the number of idle hands in the March, boosted the economy, increased the local standards of living, and heightened morale among the soldiery.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Gerald was born the second son of the earl of Brisbane. He had the typical upbringing of a noble's son with an education both in political and military matters. Because of his place as second son, it was considered likely that he would eventually either join the household guard of a greater lord or one of the Orders-Militant, so his focus was more on the wages of war than matters of diplomacy. He showed a great aptitude at an early age for both tactics and the arts of combat itself. His father pulled as many strings as he could to secure a station in life for his younger son, and at the age of twenty he took a position in the royal guard of King Francis Leopold II. Over the next ten years, he became fast friends with the crown prince, Francis Leopold III. After his friend was made king, it was not long before the capable and trusted soldier was given the title of Marquis and sent to Halsingly to take charge of the March.

Intellectual Characteristics

Gerald is an amiable man, more eager to share stories at the fireside with his soldiers as he is to break bread at court. He has proven to be a capable administrator of the March, but matters of diplomacy bore him. He is a common-sense and straightforward man, preferring to tackle a problem with brute force rather than cunning and guile. He therefore has no patience for the silver-tongued bureaucrats who supposedly aid him in managing his holding.

Morality & Philosophy

Gerald is a devout follower of Praedus, like many other noble warriors of Brisland, and values honor and truth above all else. He has little patience for intrigue and zero tolerance for dishonesty. He is normally fair in his adjudication of the King's Law, but in cases involving outright deceit of some sort he can be very harsh in doling out punishments.
