Galtian School System

Here you will find the system for the educational progression of children in the city of Galt.

School Term

Galtian schools run on an all-year timeline. Due to the Liuian Calendar system, all dates for the school year are always on the same reoccurring day every year.   The first day of school is Jywer 7th. The last day of school/graduation is Dantu 23rd.   School sessions are 4 weeks long followed by 2 weeks of break. This means that there are 10 periods of 4 weeks each. Period 10 is for testing, finals, and graduation.   School days are schedule 10:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., though children are often dropped off early or brought by school bus, as the standard workday is 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.

Educational Progression

Educational Progression - Grades, Years, Ages.PNG
~Year 5 in each tier acts as a transition year into the next level.
~Most schools, aside from private and preschools, have all grades and levels available to their students.
~Shorthand is said/written as Level-Year#, so a 9th grade student is in S-5.
Issolum Name (Earth Equivalent)
- Preschool (Early Education) -
Infant, toddlers, and preschoolers can attend schools that prepare them for their potential 15+ year educational career.   Preparation means laying the foundation for the subjects and concepts obtained through education. Since Issolum as a whole is highly invested into early childhood research, most preschools are subsequently play-based.
- Primary (Elementary) -
Children ages 5-10 years attend this tier, equivalent to elementary school. Years 1-3 are still somewhat play-based in some schools.
- Secondary (Middle) -
Children ages 10-15 years attend this tier, equivalent to a long middle school.   At year 15, each student must decide whether they will continue school to go into a specific field of study. If they are not interested in progressing in education any further, the student may graduate here to be put into the workforce. This is usually the decision for those interested in fields such as manual labor, or they may spend time doing apprenticeships instead.   Year 5 of this tier includes a practicum that puts students to work out in the world, usually in an entry level customer service job. They are required to spend at least a year working alongside doing their normal classes, but may switch to a different job at six months if they so choose. This is intended to help them gain valuable skills, especially in communication and etiquette, while also giving them a realistic taste of what they will be dealing with should they choose to stop their schooling at this tier.
- Tertiary (High) -
Children ages 15-20 years attend this year, equivalent to high school and college prep.   Year 4 and 5 consist of classes that act as generals, like you might see in a college setting. The aim is to spend the last few years of a students adolescence getting all general education finished for those who are interested in attending advanced studies later.
- Quaternary Studies (Community College) -
People of any age may attend advanced studies. If they have not recently graduated high school or cannot prove they have graduated in the (recent-ish) past, they must take an entrance exam to determine if they are ready to take advanced level classes.   These studies usually consist of 2 years of study on a specific topic that the student wishes to work with on a deeper level (roughly equivalent to a bachelor’s degree). Some fields (i.e. doctor) may take more study (see Academy below).
- Academy (University) -
After graduating from Advanced, a student may choose to enroll in Academy for either a 2-year or 5-year program of specialized education and training.   2-year programs are similar to a Master's Degree. Obtaining this will open up higher end professional jobs, but will have students entering the workforce faster than the 5-year program.   Examples of 2-year professions:
  • Doctor (General Practitioner)
  • Biologist
  • Teacher (quaternary or lower)
5-year programs are similar to a Doctorate. Obtaining this will open up the highest end of professional jobs available anywhere.   Examples of 5-year professions:
  • Doctor (Specialized: Pediatrician, etc.)
  • Ornithologist
  • Teacher (academy)

Gifted and Talented

Any of the first three tiers allow for children to progress early into further years if they present academic eligibility. Observations paired with testing compared to certain requirements determine whether a child may participate in this program. Progression is then tailored to the student case-by-base, but most often results in the student doing the course work of an entire year in the span of five periods.
