Tyn (tjɛn)
One of the Children of Eledra, Tyn is in many ways unlike her siblings. She seeks to worship or acclaim for herself and avoids conflict whenever possible. This is perhaps why she spends so little time within her realm of Vædra where she is likely to be approached by others seeking her allegiance. Instead she remains in the mirror realm which bears her name deep below Isesda, ushering in mortal essence and directing the path of these beings into their respective afterlives.
Her siblings for the most part ignore her, though a few of the more aggressive Children openly sneer at her association with mortals as anything more precious than worshippers. If such attitudes bother Tyn, she's never expressed it.
Her closest association, and likely her only routine destination beyond her own realms, is with Akashia who like her remains uninvolved in the competitions of the other Children.
Daemons are born within her underworld and while they exercise their own independent free will, it has been seen that they fear to act against her wishes and will even stand unbidden against any forces of the other Children that seek to enter Tyn without the lady's permission. In this way, Tyn holds within her realm one of the most powerful hosts of all her kin. This fact may do much to ensure the passive relationship of her siblings with their soft-spoken sister.
Divine Domains
Tyn is the supreme lady of mortality. While she retains a realm within Vædra as do all her siblings, her focus is often placed on the mirror realm that bears her name and that is the place where mortal essences arrive when their appointed lifetimes conclude. This dominion often results in mortals fearing her, but those who know her true nature know that she is in many ways the kindest deity of the Children. Her sphere includes not only the moment of death and the following afterlife, but also the mercy of relief from suffering, the ending of pain, mourning and the slow recovery where the loss becomes a part of a mortal's own being, the memory of those that have died, and other such uniquely mortal experiences which mingle grief and joy. It is perhaps for this reason that Tyn is sometimes referred to as the lady of compassion.
Artifacts
There are no known artifacts within the mortal realm which are attributed to Tyn.
Holy Books & Codes
While many have written books on Tyn, both herself and her realm, and the relation of such to mortal life, there are no scriptures or divine instructions, prophecy, etcetera which outline a faith in Tyn. Many who work with the dying or dead, including healers, caretakers, and morticians, keep faith in Tyn central in their lives, but even for these there are no rituals or structures for such veneration. Rather, there is a simple relationship of gratitude and service which pairs with their responsibilities within the community.
Interestingly, since Tyn is also the realm from which daemons are born she is commonly associated with the red cults and daeabolism in places where such practices are known, but since she lacks any formal scriptures there is no way for mortals to fathom her position in relation to these groups.
Divine Symbols & Sigils
Across Isesda there are countless animals associated with Tyn, including owls, crows, vultures, rats, beetles, moths, butterflies, frogs, and even buffalo. Additionally both yew and willow trees are commonly connected to her, as are garlic and most lethally poisonous plants.
With no formalized religion centered around Tyn, her faith bears no dedicated symbol, but many in Raiven and Derathain will place black feathers, crushed beetle, or blackened bone atop a sharpened stone with the point pressed into the earth as a monument in places where death has occurred. These are generally temporary placements, though in areas of terrible suffering larger such structures have been fashioned and maintained. Some Reman sailors will scorch a section of mast and nail up a bundle of garlic as a form of advocation against death on their journeys.
Tenets of Faith
It is commonly held that Tyn should be remembered in worship to ward off her sphere of death, but among those who serve in ways more closely associated with death there is kept a simple if unofficial commandment, "prevent suffering as ye may." There is, of course, no way to know if Tyn herself approves of this or not.
Divine Goals & Aspirations
Unlike so many of her siblings, the lady of compassion has no clear goals or plans from the perspective of mortals. Many believe her only true goal is to remain distanced from the conflicts of the other Children.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
As she is so obscured to mortals, many depictions of Tyn contradict, but there are a few commonalities passed down in legends of the godswar. The following is based on Derathaini art.
Tyn is regularly depicted as feminine, though apathetic to such distinctions. She is shown as deathly pale of skin with blackened legs and feet as if burned. Her eyes are frequently grey or pale blue and often shown without pupils. She is tall, even in comparison to her siblings, but incredibly slender. Her hair has been shown with a multitude of colors and styles throughout the years, often reflecting popular trends with black being the most common, but always it is kept distinctly short.
Social
Mannerisms
Tyn does not interact with mortals while they yet live so little is known of her. Moreover, she prevents any on the brink of death who are restored to health to retain comprehension of her realm so visions are never to be trusted in respect to her.
Legends of the godswar describe her as quiet, distant, and aloof toward her siblings, with many of the more outspoken Children showing open distain for their sister.
Hobbies & Pets
In Derathain and south Raiven, Tyn is routinely depicted with a trio of animal companions, usually birds, representing the suffering of the dying, the mixed experience of death itself, and the healing that comes with mourning. Further to the north these are sometimes different animals, reduced to two or even one, and sometimes feature multiple heads rather than being separate creatures.
In Rema these companions are usually absent.
