Confederate Tribes of the Northlands

The north can be a forbidding place. The people that live there are hardy, but often more focused on their own survival than with what lies beyond their horizons. This is perhaps why they formed a union against the encroachment of those from the south.
The tribes of the northlands have long lived in a state of mutual support. While there are many differences between the groups, especially those native to the mountains in the north and west compared to the woodlanders, they also acknowledge the benefits of having allies when nature's wrath is at its most vicious.
This is perhaps why, when emissaries from the south arrived surveying the lands and seeking to expand the influence of Atreus, Larathorn, and Vel the tribes were ready to unify against them. Atreus and Larathorn, long allied by this time, agreed to limit their influence to the lands south of the Adamant moutnains with the exception of the island home of the city-state of Avalier, long ago settled by offshoots from Larathorn and independent from the mainland of Forven.
The Dominion of course viewed such terms as an affront to the glory of Vel and demanded concessions from the tribes, thinking to strike swiftly by sailing up the river from the east. This is when the disparate peoples became the confederate tribes. Faster than the Vellan navy imagined possible forces gathered at the river's fork south of the wood in a place they called Fjor. When the Vellans arrived they were outnumbered and outpositioned. What came next should have been a bloody and nightmarish battle, but in a moment of negotiation lost to the mists of Akasha somehow the Vellan forces were convinced to withdraw.
Since then, relations with the north have been quiet but respectful. The tribes maintain a post of speakers who represent the whole in matters where the confederation is needed. For the most part this union exists soley to communicate calls for aid from one tribe to the others, but always they maintain a readiness should forces, whether of nature or nations, seek to face the north again.
