Avalier

While most of Forven remains inhospitable, with only small settlements and moderate trading towns managing to take hold for any length of time, the large island to the west in the north sea is home to the jewel of the north, Avalier. A place of learning and magic, largely protected from the political conflicts of the south by virtue of its distance and the elements, Avalier has grown to stand among the great cities of the world. Though it remains far smaller both in area and population than its contemporaries it is renowned for the advancements its technological and magical researchers have made. Indeed, with the possible exception of Axia, Avalier has become the most modern city in the world. The walls of Avalier have been designed to withstand nearly any assault, be it natural, magical, or military. Within those walls the people of Avalier live their lives in a comfort seen nowhere else in Forven and very likely beyond. Despite this seeming imbalance, Avalier remains on excellent terms with the other peoples of Forven by freely offering aid and magical support. The confederate tribes even look to Avalier when in need of a neutral arbiter of disputes. Ethnically and politically diverse, Avalier has maintained its structure through a strictly democratic and collectivist approach to all aspects of life. All who seek knowledge without ill intent are welcome and will find within the ensorcelled walls a community that is strong and loyal. Avalier rules itself as a city-state and the entire island upon which it stands is held in its care. Though they have no standing military it is generally considered foolish to entertain thoughts of conflict with them. Their advanced capabilities makes them more than a match for most forces that could be mustered and were such a force to somehow be raised it is generally assumed that a far greater force of allies and trade partners would come to Avalier's defense.
