First mining operation in the Asteroid Belt

Expedition

2037CE
3/9

After trial runs on near Earth asteroids, this is the first attempt at resource extraction from the Asteroid Belt. The target is 2028 Janequeo, a stony asteroid. They are aiming for nickel and iron extraction for delivery to Mars.

This is the first, but definitely not the last mining expedition into the Asteroid Belt, and begins the long process of extraction and eventual colonization of this region. While this and most early missions are automated, the efficiency of locally operated telepresence cannot be overstated, and eventually, people will go.
