A world of both technology and magic. One nation, the city-state of Colketh, modernized rapidly. The government took an isolationist approach rather than spreading the unique inventions. Their statement was that "All inventions made in the city are forbidden from leaving the city." The approach worked for a while until much of the technology produced within Colketh began to appear in the League of Atrai, a confederation of feudal states in a different continent. The traitor who spread the blueprints was never found. Unlike Colketh, they used new technology to conquer the entire continent and form an empire. A rivalry was formed, and several wars between the two nations were had. In a supposedly unrelated incident, a cataclysmic release of energy (known simply as "The Incident") demolished much of the continent and released a blight that began to spread rapidly. Trees, animals, and those few humans who survived underwent rapid mutations. The Atraian Empire fell in a matter of days. The Incident did not only cause destruction, however, and researchers soon discovered that it had released a new form of energy into Irus. Those who learned to harness the energy were rewarded with powers beyond mankind.
