The Dragonsong War

Dragons have ever and always been feared as hunters without compare, winged fortresses bearing mighty magic and savage claws. Many stories told by the Irra feature this human or that kobold or yet another hero looking to slay one, and coming away with trophies of a dragon's body. It is said in whispered tones that the scales of dragons can deflect even the hammerblow of Lymantrian anchors. It is said in quiet terror that a robe made from their shed fur can ward off even the heat of lava.   Though the properties and details vary, one thing is considered constant: That the pieces of a dragon's body contain ancient and deep magic, primoridal like the depths of the earth itself. And no such remnant of a slain dragon is held with higher regard or fear than their eyes. To be granted the eye of a dragon as a boon is to be given the utmost trust and faith from such an ancient creature- to steal one is to commit the deepest and most grave injustice.   Such stories inevitably lead to the recounting of the Dragonsong War, which spanned years and bled humanity and dragonkind alike dry, leaving only hollow shells of their civilizations. The theft of not just a single eye, but both eyes of the father of dragons, the broodking Nidhogg, could never be seen as anything but a betrayal and call to war. The true tale is not known even to the Irra- whether the eyes were a true gift, misinterpreted and mistakenly thought stolen, or taken via treachery and subterfuge, not even the most ancient of tales can say with agreement.   But intentions mattered not- such as the facts stood, a dragon's eyes had been taken, and tensions between humans and dragons reached their peak.
