Karteira Ranch

The Karteira Ranch is rather typical for a Kobold farm in many ways. The dire-weasels that scurry about the edges of the farm, herding animals away from the tunnels leading deeper down into the mountain, fill the ranch with lively noise and bustle. The Kobolds, led by Milleore Karteira, who works hard to prepare to inherit the farm, claw through the packed earth, placing rows upon rows of seeds and entrusting them to the earth's tender embrace. The mud, the beasts, the food, all is as it should be in the eyes of the Kobolds.
There is a strangeness to the farm, however. It is one of very few that exist in the uppermost reaches of Irrum Vath, tucked into the shallow caverns in the base of the mountain, where even wind and light may sometimes filter down into the caverns, and rain trickles into the cracks of the walls. Many are skeptical of the value of this, as the Kobolds themselves have long since developed effective methods of irrigation and lighting for their farms. However, the current matriarch of the Karteria clan insists that the natural light and water is nothing short of crucial for the farm's continued success.
This is not entirely a falsehood told for the sake of marketing. The presence of natural water and light, along with being closer to the surface in less densely packed soil, allows for the effective farming of more food than deeper farms could produce in the same amount of time. In recent years, even this production has begun to be strained as more and more food is needed to continue feeding the growing population, but the farmers still maintain their confidence even as their work grows more arduous.
