Mechanics & Inner Workings

While crossbows differ greatly along with their firing mechanism, the rolling nut lock is the most commonly used. The rolling nut lock places a trigger, or tickler, at the bottom of the crossbow affixed to an axle that you pull up, or you simply squeeze your hand. Inside of the crossbow is the nut, which has both a perpendicular slot for the bolt to be slid into from the front and a intersecting axial slot to place and hold the string at the back of the bolt. The nut looks like a cylinder with a hook, or intersecting axial slot, placed at the top facing the rear of the crossbow, it is placed on a axle allowing the nut to spin. The tickler pushes against a tiny notch placed at the bottom of the nut, stopping it from spinning forward and releasing the string. When the tickler is pulled, it is moved out of the notch and the string spins the nut forward. The sting then goes back to its resting position, launching the bolt forward.

Manufacturing process

The metal, wood, or bone first need to be shaped into the limbs, a stock, a shelf, a lath, and the firing mechanism. The shelf is usually carved strait into the stock. After all is done then you simply need to assemble, using metal pins to hold it together.
