Following the Entente's success in the Hundred Days Offensive, a first attempt to broker peace is made.

It wasn't an easy decision, but all sides were pretty sure the war had to end sooner or later. The German Empire wasn't sure about its ability to continue waging the war, and the trauma of the January Republic was still quite fresh. After the United States joined the war and the Hundred Days Offensive happened, the situation got even more tense.   The First attempt to broker a peace happened right after the offensive ended. A month long armistice was called on both Western and Eastern Fronts, and an attempt to negotiate a peace treaty happened. High time for the German Empire, especially as it still held position deep in the French Republic territory and could theoretically hope for good terms.   The armistice and the following negotiations ended up as a major disaster for Entente. Their terms were extreme - and included partial disarmament of Germany, liquidation of its Navy, losing Alsace and Lorraine plus most of its colonies, and losing a significant part of former Prussian Partition to newly created Poland that was supposed to have access to the sea.   The terms weren't much lighter for its allies - The Ottoman Empire was to be effectively dismantled with only Turkey remaining as it was. Bulgaria was to lose Macedonia and other places it currently controlled and didn't have before the war. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was to lose Galicia and north-eastern Italy, plus Southern Slavs were to be liberated (an effect of mass propaganda action of Serbs in the West), and there were talks of independence referendum in Czech Republic (due to Masaryk influence).   The terms were met with obvious disbelief among the Central Powers representative that saw them as something absolutely impossible and even borderline insane - not to mention deeply unjust. They were born from a combination of a renewed belief in victory due to American help and the fact, that after so many casualties and loses, no country of the Entente was willing to be very merciful.   However, even the United States saw that as something going much too far. It might have passed when Wilson was a president, but president Hiram Johnson had a bit more realistic approach. The United States didn't participate in these particular negotiations, as the president was almost 100% sure that it wouldn't work in the end, which further weakened Entente position.   After two weeks of negotiations that changed nothing, The Central Powers representative returned home and announced Entente terms. This led to a sudden spark of war support. France was kept strong internally since the beggining of the war because it saw that it was on the edge of abyss. Now, due to the terrible blunder of the Entente diplomats, the Central Powers suddenly saw that they were on the edge of abyss as well. And only achieving victory could save them.
