Disastrous attempt to open another front and open the Dardanelle straits for Entente sea trade.

The landing on Gallipoli Peninsula had several goals. That could be summed up to kicking the Ottoman Empire from the war by using the Peninsula as a staging point for attack on Constantinople. That would allow the Entente to achieve several things... at once. While facing outdated and puny (as it was seen at the time) army of the Ottoman Empire.   It would kick the Empire out of the war, securing Suez Canal and ending the Caucasus Front. It would open Black Sea ports for Entente sea transport, allowing it to bolster Russian Empire warmachine. It would mean that Bulgaria would almost certainly not join the Central Powers while probably persuading both Greece and Romania to join Entente. In short - it would mean almost certain victory in the war. And a pretty quick one.   Unfortunately for Entente, Central Powers knew that they were coming. And Ottoman Empire was merely a sick man of Europe, not a dead one. Landing forces were bogged down in a prolonged war of attrition, while Entente navy suffered grievous casualties due to mines and coastal artillery.   After almost a year of rather bloody fights, Entente was forced to retreat.
