Cristero Rebellion in Mexico

Revolution

For last three years, the persecution of Catholic Church in Mexico grew in strength. Finally, the war began.

Increasingly secular dictatorship in Mexico began taking even more anti-Catholic measures, starting from circa 1918. A culmination of it were acts of secular terrorism, including an attempted bombing of Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and governmental attempts on closing churches, together with many priests getting arrested under false allegations.   It was a civil war many years in the making, and the government policies only accelerated the inevitable. The rebels - called Cristeros - began waging a guerilla warfare against government. With many successes. Unfortunately, the government retorted with even more extremist measures... which led to the Holy League intervention.   A flood of weapons, instructors and volunteers - some of whom departed to Mexico in division-size units, together with tanks and airplanes - soon led to the Cristero movement spreading far and wide, and the guerilla warfare changing into open civil war.
