Session 3: Going West Report
General Summary
Travel report, Onvyr Leithor
Lug 2 to Lug 5 121 EOT Lug 2 After clearing camp we set out on the road again. Our little caravan was joined by the travelling bard, Robert Talespinner. While he doesn't have a decent singing voice, his stories are entertaining and he has been amusing the men and women of the caravan each night.
The young lord rejoined his friends at the vanguard while Haley remained behind in the noble's carriage to keep miss Elsa company.
The second day of our journey was miserable. The temperature dropped several degrees and a wet fog covered the road, drenching us all to the bone. The junior mage Luke offered some of his magic during the lunch break to keep us dry, but that trick had only a limited effect. At the end of the day we approached the hamlet of Rosebloom. The region is blessed with a strange climate. Fishures in the earth brought magma from below up to the surface. This magma heats the ground and causes a nearby pond to perpetually boil. As a consequence, the valley is always temperate and humid. This means trees, bushes and flowers grow and bloom year round. The hamlet itself has somewhere between 50 to 70 inhabitants. The most striking feature, next to the boiling pond, is the brand new white stone palace built on a nearby hill. Some lord was given dominion over the valley recently and built himself a castle. We were received well enough by the locals. My local contact, Hector, had the provisions I requested ready and our young heroes brought them to camp. The villagers came to greet us and the friendly greetings turned in to a small impromptu festival. I noticed Luke and Liliana talk to Anna, the granddaughter of Hector and a strange little girl, while Allistan bonded with the local hunters. I heard he cheated at some contest, but no problems ensued. The others were absent. I found out later they traveled to the palace and spent the night with sir Flinn, the local lord. Lug 3 The journey continued. The weather cleared up a little. The temperature was still low, but at least the fog dissapeared. The forest continues to be a dark and threatening place. I believe even our young heroes have begun noticing the dark shadows.
While the day passed uneventfully, the following night brought some excitement. I asked our vanguard to take watch duty and somewhere after midnight they were contacted by a restless spirit asking for help. Liliana, Luke, Allistan and Gael ventured in to the dark woods, following the ghost to a ruined cabin and a small lake. There they were attacked by another undead creature that tried to drown them. According to them they had stumbled upon a long forgotten cursed grievance between two sisters. One drowned the other and both were now trapped as spirits on this plane. They told me they defeated the hostile spirit and brought peace to other one by reuniting her with her lost lover. Or at least they reunited what was left of the corpses in the same grave. This seemed to pacify the undead. Lug 4 The weather continued to get worse. The temperatures dropped just below freezing and snow began to fall. While unusual, it is not unheared of for winter to return for one last storm early in spring. The feeling of menace continued to grow although our young vanguard either hardly noticed or cared little. They preffered to play around in the snow. Sometimes I forget how young these children are the day they are sent to the big city, The forest's threat was not an idle one however. A large white wolf with blue eyes attacked our vanguard. They brough it down without serious injury. Despite their youth I just lamented, the prowess in battle of our Tarn companions cannot be questioned. I know veteran guards who would have turned tail or who would have fallen against such a formidable foe. The day ended in grateful silence. Lug 5 At last spring returns. The temperature has risen and the sun is shining. It is pleasant now, similarly to the day we set out. We will reach Hillfield today.
I have heard rumors among some of the caravan guards and drivers, they believe the youngsters to be cursed. It may prove difficult to convince them to continue on to Keralon. At the very least I will join them. I have also talked to the bard, Talespinner. He too seems interested in traveling with us to the Silver City. Two carriages and a cart make for a small caravan, but if necessary it will suffice.
