Home & Haven: Room Customization System

Personalize your living space with items that offer comfort, utility, and small bonuses for activities performed there.

Core Concept: Your Space, Your Style

This system allows you to acquire various items – furniture, decorations, hobby equipment – and decide how they are arranged within your character's primary personal space. Certain items, when present and interacted with appropriately within that space, can offer small advantages for relaxation, skill use, or social interactions hosted there. The focus is on enhancing immersion and providing tangible benefits for downtime activities.

Your Personal Space

  • Definition: This system primarily applies to the location your character considers their private sanctuary, usually their bedroom (if living at home) or their assigned dorm room (#narasato-dormitories).
  • Shared Spaces: If sharing a dorm room, customization choices might need to be negotiated narratively with roommates (NPCs or other PCs). Common areas (like dorm lounges) are generally not customizable through this system unless via specific group efforts or plot events.

Acquiring Furnishings & Items

Characters can obtain items for their room through various means consistent with the game's slice-of-life activities:

  • Purchasing:
  • Use earned money (Wealth System) to buy items from stores in the #shopping-district (furniture stores, home goods shops, hobby stores, electronics stores, etc.). Availability depends on your Wealth Rank – basic items are accessible at Average, while high-end or specialized items require Above Average or High Wealth.
  • Gifting:
  • Characters might receive room items as gifts from NPCs or other PCs, impacting Relationship Ranks. A thoughtfully chosen item can be a significant gift!
  • Crafting:
  • Use relevant Crafting Skills (Art for posters/decor, Sewing for cushions/curtains, Mechanics/Technology for gadgets, Cooking for a snack stash?) or participate in relevant Hobbies (Hobby Progression System) to create personalized items for the room.
  • Rewards & Found Items:
  • Unique decorative items, useful gadgets, or meaningful keepsakes might be awarded for completing plot milestones, achieving personal goals, or found during specific investigations or explorations.

Placing Items & Limits

  • Narrative Placement: Describe where items are placed within the room when you acquire them. This adds flavour and helps visualize the space. "My new comfy armchair goes in the sunny corner by the window." "I'm putting up the band poster above my desk."
  • Reasonable Limits: There isn't a strict "slot" system, but rooms have finite space. The GM has final say on what realistically fits. Focus on items that are meaningful or provide desired effects.
  • Active Items: While you can describe many decorative items, aim to have only 3-5 items that provide active mechanical benefits at any given time to keep things manageable. You can swap items out narratively (e.g., putting away a seasonal decoration, replacing an old poster).

Item Categories & Effects

Items generally fall into categories based on their function, offering minor benefits when used appropriately within your room.

  • Comfort & Relaxation Items:
  • Examples: Comfy armchair, plush beanbag chair, soft rug, calming lamp, scented candles (if allowed!), high-quality bedding, sound machine.
  • Potential Effect: When performing a Stress Recovery action (like Relaxing Self-Care Routine, Unwind Passively) in your room using this item, gain +1 additional Stress recovered OR gain a +1 Rank Shift on a check made to achieve deep relaxation/meditation.
  • Hobby & Skill Stations:
  • Examples: Sturdy study desk, artist's easel, large bookshelf, workbench/tool station, music practice setup (keyboard stand, amp), specialized computer setup, dedicated crafting table.
  • Potential Effect: When performing actions related to a specific Skill or Hobby using this dedicated station within your room, gain a +1 Rank Shift on the relevant Skill check (e.g., Academics/Research at the desk, Crafting (Art) at the easel, Performance with the music setup).
  • Entertainment & Social Items:
  • Examples: Game console & TV, good stereo system, extra seating (beanbags, floor cushions), small snack/drink station, board game collection.
  • Potential Effect: When hosting friends for a specific social activity (gaming night, listening party, study group) in your room that utilizes these items, gain a +1 Rank Shift on checks made to ensure the gathering goes well (e.g., Etiquette for hosting, Persuasion to smooth over minor disagreements during the activity) OR gain slightly increased Relationship Rank progress with guests from the successful gathering.
  • Decorative & Personal Items:
  • Examples: Posters (bands, movies, art), framed photographs (friends, family), potted plants, meaningful souvenirs, displayed collections (figurines, rocks), gifted trinkets.
  • Potential Effect: Primarily narrative flavour. May help stabilize Mood (seeing cherished photos counteracts Melancholy slightly) or serve as reminders of Relationships (displaying a gift). If an item strongly relates to a character's Strength or Talent, the GM might occasionally allow a minor narrative edge or insight when interacting with it thoughtfully.
  • Organizational Items:
  • Examples: Large bulletin board, wall planner, well-organized shelving units, desk organizers, tidy storage boxes.
  • Potential Effect: When choosing the "Plan for Tomorrow / Organize" action in your room, gain an additional minor benefit (e.g., prevents an extra point of Stress related to morning rush, grants +1 Rank Shift on the first check related to that plan the next day).

How It Works in Play

  • Acquire Item: Get the item through purchase, gifting, crafting, etc.
  • Describe Placement: Roleplay placing the item in your room, describing its look and location.
  • Activate Benefit: When performing an action inside your room that directly relates to an item's function (e.g., studying at your desk, relaxing in your comfy chair, hosting friends with your game console), remind the GM of the item and potentially gain its minor benefit (situational Rank Shift, improved Stress recovery, etc.). Benefits generally do not apply outside your personal space.

Integration with Other Systems

  • Wealth System: Required for purchasing most items. Higher Wealth allows access to better/more specialized furnishings.
  • Gifting & Relationships: Rooms can display received gifts, strengthening bonds narratively. Items can be purchased as gifts for others' rooms.
  • Crafting & Hobbies: Allows creation of personalized items. Hobby Stations provide direct support for pursuing hobbies.
  • Stress System: Comfort items provide enhanced Stress recovery during downtime in the room. A messy/uncomfortable room might hinder recovery.
  • Mood System: Personalized, comforting spaces can help stabilize Moods.
  • Skill System: Skill Stations provide situational +1 Rank Shifts for specific skill checks performed in the room.
