Kinilani Colour Theory

Kinilani Colour Theory covers a set of common interpretations of a variety of colours, largely based on alchemical associations.   Cerulean (Light Blue) represents air, magic, and danger. Air is one of the 4 base elements in alchemy, and is associated with light blue to the colour of the sky. According to fundamental magical theory, large amounts of air are prone to the dangerous magical storms that plague the Wildlands with a variety of random, and usually hazardous effects, so light blue is also widely recognized as a symbol of danger. This association with magical storms also naturally makes the colour widely associated with magic, particularly when paired with orange.   Ultramarine (Dark Blue) represents water and prosperity. Kinilan's economy is dramatically reliant on water - internal trade relies heavily on a network of canals, and many of its biggest industries are based on exporting luxury goods around the world, which has led the country to rely on imports for basic foodstuffs and other similar necessities.   Green is associated with earth, agriculture, and hunting. This is a fairly universal association - the greenery of plants covers most of the earth, and is a sign of the land's capacity for agriculture or hunting purposes.   Orange and Yellow are associated with fire, passion, and magic. Fire is orange and yellow, and gives off heat, and heat is commonly associated with passions - be it intense love or fury and hate. Fire is also the other element associated with magic, and as such, magic is also associated with orange or yellow.   Red and White are associated with wine, love, friendship, and unity. Kinilan is a nation that was founded on the wine trade, and wine is a fundamental symbol of the nation itself. It is thus associated with unity, both in the national sense and in interpersonal settings like love and friendship. Of these, red is often more associated with the intensity of love as red wines tend to be incredibly rich in flavour, while white is more associated with friendships.   Violet is associated with wealth and beauty. Purple dyes are extremely rare and expensive, which means that products using them tend to only be used by the very wealthy, and tend to be very finely crafted. This in turn has resulted in purple flowers and such being particularly popular in Kinilan (as well as many other nations), particularly among those in the middle class wishing to convey a sense of wealth without actually spending much.   Black and Grey are associated with death and degeneration. This comes from the colour of ashes and charcoal; most funerals in Kinilan are conducted by cremation. Additionally, most pigments will fade to a colourless grey, and silver tarnishes to a mottled black and grey.
