Sonin
the Sonin, or Sky whales, are one of the more famous anomalies found in the Bay of Ashes. these heavily mutated beasts become more violent over the course of their life as the mutation progresses.
Basic Information
Anatomy
these massive creatures are born with additional flippers along their back and sides, in addition crystaline growths spread throughout their body, while painful they do provide increased toughness to the hide of the beast.
Genetics and Reproduction
Females give birth to calves every two to three years. They remain pregnant for about one year before giving birth. When born, the Sonin calf is about 23 feet long and weighs 5,000 to 6,000 pounds . A nursing Sonin mother produces over 50 gallons of milk a day.
Growth Rate & Stages
Sonin take roughly 8 years to reach sexual maturity, over that time they grow 12 times larger. a Sonin calf cannot fly at birth, and is raised in the water, it takes two to three years for a Calf to grow large enough to fly, or rather for the Mystrium growths to become powerful enough to allow for flight. as a Sonin ages, they will become progressivly more aggressive as the Mystrium growths become more painful and eventually reach the brain. over this period it is common for a Sonin to mutate in a number of ways, causing the species to rapidly evolve. a generation of Sonin may be completely different from its predecessor.
Ecology and Habitats
Sonin seem content to live in the Bay of Ashes, venturing out rarely when the Spire becomes unstable and causes plannar storms such as molten fire. they seem to have a sixth sense to predict this as they often leave days or even weeks in advance.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Sonin require a large amount of food to survive, eating nearly 9 tonnes of food a day, because of the Mystrium mutations many Sonin have developed ways to gather nutrients differently though many are carniverous and will hunt for prey in waters, or on land as they fly by.
Biological Cycle
Sonin begin their life in the water, where the mother will care for and defend the Calf until its Mystrium growths allow for flight. after this the Sonin will return to the water only to sleep, or on occasion hide. when a Sonin reaches sexual maturity roughly 8-10 years after birth, they will leave the family pattern and seek a mate. 30 years after birth it is common for a Sonin to become more hostile, as its painful Growths become more intrusive. over the course of the next 50 years a Sonin will become increasingly unstable as it mutates, and suffers from its painful Mystrium growths.
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Sonin appear to rely on a form of ecolocation in darkness, suggesting that they have poor eye sight or at least poor dark vision.
Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms
all Sonin have varying levels of Mystrium growths throughout their body. because of the invasive nature of Mystrium, and its ability to bond to and mutate Organic and inorganic matter it is passed down through Sonin generations as if it were a genetic trait, slowly growing and mutating the organic host.
