Mental characteristics

Personal history

Luther was born among a group of devout Anir followers who tended sheep not far from their temple. From a young age he was responsible for aiding in the training of Clerics and Paladins at the nearby Temple where his family lived, tending to armor and horses. As he grew into adulthood Luther took it upon himself to take the Oath of a Paladin, forswearing title and deed as well as his family name to better serve the Church. Luther was sent to the growing Anir temples in Argantus to aid in their spreading of the word, and guard the path of missionaries between the two kingdoms. Luther would be tested many times in battle along this sacred path, by orcs, bandits, trolls, and even Khoven forces as they pushed further north. Luther learned a good deal of tactics from his friend Dain Earthshaker, the Argantian representative sent to aid in the defense of the path. the two would defend this path for nearly two decades with each other, or as Dain put it just enough time to finish introductions. As the war with the Khoven soured, Luther was recalled to Defend the Temple where he got his first taste of true war. Luther found himself pushed into an unwanted position as more a soldier and less a healer, his talents only enough to spare the dying a few moments pain it seemed. Luther returned to the Temple, weary of war after six years marching from field to field. Luther insisted he could train the next generation of Paladins in the tactics he'd learned from the Argantians, as well as his time at war with the Khoven , a better use for his talents. The church agreed after a time, and Luther was sent to the Garden of the Sun to complete the training of Anir Paladins. upon receiving his first batch of trainee's he discovered that the Church had taken up the practice of indoctrinating a good number of their Paladins from infancy, molding orphans into zealots. Luther was disgusted by the prospect of abusing these young minds who had never been given the opportunity to chose their own path and took it to the Garden Master. They felt Luther's outrage misplaced, and censured the Paladin for breaking his Oath to serve Anir and the Church without question. Luther disagreed with the church but felt beholden to his Oath and to Anir himself, and so swallowed his complaints and began to train the Paladins. for many years Luther would train young aspiring Paladins, one of which was Jora Kampfrun himself the newly anointed Champion of Anir. Luther felt his faith in the Church renewed with Jora, who came from a background very similar to his own. here was a boy who chose the path of light, and exemplified everything Luther hoped his Paladins to become. During their training Luther would explain the duality of a Paladins nature, they were soldiers of a god who held mercy and charity above all else. Luther thought Jora took the lessons to heart, and indeed for a time the Champion did, though years of War would taint Jora and Anir's wrath would seal his fate. Luther was heartbroken to hear the news of Jora's betrayal, and his favored pupil now roamed the countryside slaughtering the faithful and burning its temples. Luther asked to be relieved of his duty as an instructor to aid the suffering of the civilians who suffered at the hand of Jora and the Khoven, but he was denied. Instead he was ordered to hunt down Jora and slay him, returning with the sacred Sunsword. Luther refused, he had long ago taken an Oath of Peace that prevented him in taking a life, he'd done so to the Garden Master himself! Now they asked him to disregard his Oaths to hunt a dear friend of Luther's. For his refusal to obey the Church Luther was stripped of his rank as Paladin and excommunicated from the faithful. Luther would release the book, War Without Faith, nearly nine years later to the outrage of the Church and many of its followers. Luther stood by his word, free of his Oaths as a Paladin he was free to express himself without their censorship. Despite Luther's protests, a war between Anir faithful was sparked by his work and saw the former Paladin sickened with grief. Dain, his closest and oldest friend stood by his side at his death bed and knew the Paladin not long for this world. Despite his poor health, unknown forces saw fit to dispatch an Assassin to murder Luther in his sleep. Many attributed this to the spiteful Garden of the Sun faithful, though they denied any involvement in his death, citing that he was at deaths door already and that the damage of his book could not be undone by his death. Still this intensified the war and tore the kingdom apart, with many fleeing east to Krogar to escape the fighting. For many long years Luthers work was tainted by the strife it brought, though eventually it managed to be brought back to the light. Dain and his family were attributed as a major factor of this, citing the book as inspiration for a number of their tactics and reforms in the coming centuries during their negotiations with outsiders.
