Carofaen

The various forms of chitin and flesh from the prisoners of Limbo.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Carofaen appears like a purple crystalline structure at first, sometimes even mistaken for Purple Mystrium. at touch however, the structure feels organic like a beetle's shell. even outside of the environment, or creature from which Carofaen is found it feels warm to the touch, and reacts to certain stimulation such as heat and cold.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Carofaen can be carved and bent into many shapes, and can repair itself given enough time. the material requires prolonged shelter from sunlight in a moist environment in order to regenerate however, this process is much quicker if there is organic material nearby for the Carofaen to infest. Carofaen resembles Mystrium in this regard, both able to propogate so long as there are material nearby to 'consume'.

Compounds

Carofaen has two variaties, though it's nearly impossible to tell them apart. one species of Carofaen appears to secrete a thin oil that is highly venomous making it particularly deadly on slashing and stabbing weapons. The other Species of Carofaen has a dense core with serated barbs and pins that prick the enemy. though they secrete no venom those struck by the weapon will complain of headaches and whispers, ominous shapes.

Origin & Source

Carofaenis found near area's infested by Chaos such as Limbo or invasion sights. the Material is considered a living creature though attempts to discern how it survives have been inconclusive. all examinations of Carofaen  have yielded no results as to how the organism reacts, survives, or why certain types of Carofaen are venomous and others appear to have psychic abilities.

Life & Expiration

Carofaen cannot survive without regular exposure to moisture darkness, and blood. the husk of the organism becomes brittle and eventually shatters if not exposed to these specific conditions for prologned periods of time.

History & Usage

History

Carofaen was first seen adhered to a number of Abarations that normally lacked chitinous plating, which prompted a number of researches to put out bounties on the unknown material. originally thought to be a crystaline material, after several days without water and exposure to light the Carofaen cracked revealing the organic honeycomb structure within. accidental injuries from the materials eventually led to the discovery of the toxic and psionic nature as well. researchers becoming paranoid, and voilently ill.

Discovery

Carofaen was first discovered on Fingers of Thrayn from the Old Kingdom. Dwarfkin exploarers into that unearthed region discovered a vast cavern of overgrown structures in the flesh and chitten of Carofaen.

Everyday use

Carofaen has never seen widespread use because of the dangerous origins of the organic material. It is however highly sought after by assassins. particularly assassins of the Old Kingdom where the sunlight cannot damage the organism.

Manufacturing & Products

Carofaen must be carved into the desired shape using sunlight as a sort of furnace. this causes the Carofaento spasm and often lash out with  it's venom or psychic chatter making the process dangerous at the best of times. eventually however the Ocrm seems to adapt and over many months sometimes years weapons can be made from the material.

Byproducts & Sideproducts

Carofaen venom is potent but short lives, making it unviable as a suitable poison to be sold.

Hazards

Carofaen produces a chattering hum or a toxic oil to defend itself, making the material deadly to both user and enemy in many cases.

Environmental Impact

Carofaen is an invasive species not native to the Material Plane, it appears to be a symbiotic creature offering increased defensive capabilities in return for mobility.

Distribution

Trade & Market

there is a small market with a high demand for Carofaen due to it's regenerative properties as well as it's venom or psychic abilities. Carofaen also isn't inherintly magical making it a favorite of the Narsai tribes who must be wary of Mystrium veins destabalizing from stray magic.

Storage

Carofaen should not be exposed to dry enviornments for prolonged periods of time, direct sunlight damage can be mitigated by coating the material in an oil that will also help in dry enviornments.

Law & Regulation

Many kingdoms see Carofaen as an invasive species and will destroy it on sight.
Type
Biomaterial
Odor
Ocrm smells faintly sweet when damaged.
Common State
Carofaen is part of many Aberrations chitinous plating, apparently existing as a symbiotic presence. it is also found clinging to other organisms near infested areas from Limbo ranging from birds to plants.
